EPI News—Our most important stories this week

Top CEOs made 271 times more than the typical worker in 2016

In the latest report in EPI’s annual series on CEO pay, EPI president Lawrence Mishel and research assistant Jessica Schieder look at CEO pay using two different measures. The first measure incorporates the value of stock options realized (or cashed in) in 2016 into total CEO compensation, while the second measure instead uses the value of stock options granted during that year. (Both measures also include salary, bonuses, restricted stock grants, and long-term incentive payouts.) Using the stock-options-realized measure, Mishel and Schieder find that CEOs of America’s 350 largest firms made 271 times more than the typical worker in 2016, down from 286-to-1 in 2015, but well above the 20-to-1 ratio in 1965. Using the stock-options-granted measure, CEO compensation rose to $13.0 million in 2016, up from $12.5 million in 2015. Read the report »

The Trump administration is adding 15,000 H-2B guestworker visas in 2017, but the data don’t justify an increase

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Monday it will expand the H-2B guestworker program by 15,000 visas for fiscal year 2017, despite scant evidence of labor shortages in the top H-2B jobs, according to a new report by EPI’s Daniel Costa. Costa also highlights that many migrant workers have been exploited through the H-2B program and that employers have been allowed to underpay H-2B workers for years thanks to loopholes in wage regulations. Costa ultimately suggests that employers experiencing a local labor shortage might find available U.S. workers if they recruited outside their city, region, or state, and if they offered more attractive wages and benefits (including offering transportation and housing to workers from outside the local area).

The potential macroeconomic benefits from increasing infrastructure investment

In a new report, EPI’s Josh Bivens finds that public investment in infrastructure could contribute significantly to solving two pressing macroeconomic problems facing the U.S. economy: a severe and chronic shortfall of aggregate demand, which has kept growth in both jobs and wages too slow, and a rapid deceleration in the pace of productivity growth, which provides the potential ceiling on how fast average income can rise. According to Bivens, there is strong evidence that a period of increased infrastructure investment effort could provide the fiscal expansion and capital deepening needed to boost both aggregate demand and productivity growth.

EPI in the news

The Chicago Tribune quoted EPI’s Labor Counsel Celine McNicholas in a story about the impacts President Trump’s labor policies have had on workers. Referring to the Trump administration’s rollbacks of worker protections, reversal of the Labor Department’s position on the overtime threshold, and proposed Labor Department budget cuts, among other things, McNicholas said, “The first six months of the Trump administration have been devastating for workers in this country—unprecedented even.” | From Overtime Rules to Worker Protections, 5 Ways Trump Is Shifting Labor Policy »
In a New York Times piece bout a recent University of Washington (UW) study on the Seattle minimum wage, economist Arindrajit Dube cites two studies co-authored by EPI’s Ben Zipperer—a recent analysis of the UW study’s data and methodology and a study that analyzes data from 1979 to 2016 to estimate the impact of 137 state-level minimum wage increases that occurred during that period.| Minimum Wage and Job Loss: One Alarming Seattle Study is not the last word »
The Washington Post interviewed EPI’s Lawrence Mishel about his recent report (co-authored with EPI’s Jessica Schieder) on CEO pay. “The very highest paid [CEOs] may be receiving less this year than last when you include how much they received from cashing out their stock options,” said Mishel. “But CEO pay remains extraordinarily high relative to what’s happened to stock prices, wages of other high earners or corporate profits.” | Major Company CEOs Made 271 Times the Typical U.S. Worker in 2016 »
The Atlantic’s CityLab covered EPI’s recent report on the macroeconomic benefits of investing in infrastructure. | Republicans Should Pivot to Infrastructure »
The Huffington Post spoke with EPI’s Daniel Costa about the Trump administration’s H-2B visa expansion. The article reports that Costa “said there is no real evidence of a nationwide shortage in the industries that rely on H-2B visas” and that Costa “found that wages had remained stagnant or decline in nine of [the top 10 H-2B occupations]—an indication that employers aren’t raising wages the way they normally would if they had to attract workers.” | Trump Administration Adds More Foreign Guest Worker Visas »

Hi ,
When I first met Michael in Santa Monica at the Bulletproof Cafe (Michael and I both love bulletproof coffee), his methodology baffled and intrigued me deeply.
You see, I am a systems guy. Everything has always been formulaic for me... And I have coached that way - until I understood what Michael was doing. It blew my mind. And I know it will open new paradigms for you too.
Michael does not teach techniques.
Yes, you read that right. There isn’t a single technique or X-step process to follow. No secret box of systems or “advanced” tools to master.
Nothing. Nada. Zilch.
Now, I know this can seem like a big leap of faith. It’s an entirely different approach to coaching... And you must be wondering -- how do you coach effectively without using any tools or techniques?
Well, that’s exactly what makes Michael’s training interesting and unique. He delves into the principles of human behavior and how the mind works to create lasting transformation.
And once you fully grasp these true principles of transformative coaching, you won’t need to rely on limiting techniques or formulaic processes anymore.
Instead, you’ll know how to tap into your unlimited creative potential as a coach to create powerful transformation -- with less effort and in less time.
What you’ll discover in this training is so powerful, no technique or tool could replace it.
Love. Ajit
