Now, more than ever, is the time to travel to Cuba.
Santiago to Havana: Trail of the Revolution November 10–18, 2017
The Obama administration initiated an era of goodwill and dialogue between the U.S. and Cuba that is now being undercut by President Trump’s new restrictions. These changes do not affect Nation trips to the island; in fact, tours like ours are now the only way the inquisitive, conscientious traveler can conduct a “people-to-people” visit to Cuba. But now, more than ever, we believe it is important to bring goodwill to the Cuban people. Join us in November for an in-depth exploration of Cuba.
Our eight-night tour will take us from Santiago de Cuba to Havana, with visits to Camagüey, Bayamo, and Santa Clara. We’ll learn about the Cuban Revolution from experts at some of its most pivotal locations, including the Moncada Barracks, the site of the first armed assault by Fidel Castro and his band of rebels on July 26, 1953; explore the stunning colonial city of Camagüey, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with a local historian; hear from one of Cuba’s leading experts in preservation and conservation of historical patrimony; and visit one of the most sacred places in Cuba for Catholics and practitioners of Santería, the Basílica del Santuario Nacional de Nuestra Señora de la Caridad del Cobre. We end in Havana where there will be time to spend wandering the streets of Old Havana and enjoying wonderful Cuban music and food.Traveling with us on this adventure is longtime Nation contributor and Cuba expert Peter Kornbluh. Peter is the director of the Cuba Documentation Project at George Washington University’s National Security Archive and the author of several books on Cuba, including Back Channel to Cuba: The Hidden History of Negotiations Between Washington and Havana, and has recently written for The Nation about the effects Trump’s new policy will have on the island.
Throughout our trip, we will immerse ourselves in the beauty and energy of the Cuban cities and towns we’ll visit, spending our days meeting with prominent Cuban professors, government officials, preservationists, historians, physicians, urban planners, artists, and more. Our evenings will be filled with exclusive concerts by renowned musicians, private showings at artists’ studios, and performances by students of Cuba’s internationally acclaimed dance institutes. These are only some of the highlights of this exciting program—see the complete itinerary for full details.
“These trips are important to educate ourselves to the realities of Cuba and for preserving our right to travel,” says Peter Kornbluh. We encourage you to go to Cuba to see for yourself. Read more from Peter in The Nation as he interviews four veterans of the travel-to-Cuba movement on the new restrictions.
The all-inclusive cost of this weeklong tour is $5,865 plus $380 airfare to/from Florida per person with double occupancy ($300 single supplement). This includes two nights in four-star accommodations in Santiago, two nights in a private guest house in Camagüey (a casa particular), and four nights in four-star accommodations in Havana; all ground transportation within Cuba; guided tours, seminars, and lectures; entrance to Cuba’s preeminent museums and attractions; several private music concerts; dance performances; most meals (including libations); and other captivating activities and events.
