Dear Stjepan,
Tell Cargill to cut ties with conflict palm oil!
Two years ago, a toxic palm oil spill wreaked havoc on Guatemala’s Pasión River. The palm oil company REPSA was implicated in the disaster. When local communities fought back, they were met with violence -- culminating in the murder of environmental activist Rigoberto Lima Choc and the kidnapping of three human rights defenders.
To this day, no one has been held accountable. REPSA continues to operate freely. And any activist who dares to denounce the company’s activities faces intimidation, threats, defamation campaigns, and even assassination plots.
REPSA and other companies with ties to conflict palm oil get away with its destructive business model because multinational agribusiness giants like Cargill buy their palm oil. But if you speak up, you can convince Cargill to stop supporting these companies -- and help stop the cycle of violence.
Tell Cargill to cut ties with conflict palm oil now!
Cargill is one of the largest purchasers of palm oil from Guatemala. So it has massive influence over companies like REPSA.
Last year, Cargill asked REPSA to prevent future violence by adhering to a policy of “No Violence and Intimidation” or be at risk of losing its business. REPSA agreed, satisfying Cargill’s request -- but the death threats and acts of intimidation have not stopped.
The spokesperson for a local human rights organization had his home staked out for 10 days. His house was broken into. He came home to find armed men waiting for him. But still, nothing was done to end this pattern of hostility.
Cargill needs to do more than pay lip service to human rights. It needs to stop supporting conflict palm oil now!
Tell Cargill to stop supporting companies responsible for conflict palm oil.
REPSA has so much political influence, and there is so much corruption in the region, that even Guatemalan authorities have done little to stop the violence. Since the government can’t be trusted to protect environmental activists and communities, we need companies like Cargill to step up.
Cargill can’t pretend it doesn’t know about the problem. Earlier this year, we handed Cargill a detailed letter describing a public act of intimidation that occurred in front of 13 international observers. During an observer mission comprised of international jurists, religious leaders, human rights advocates, and even a European Parliamentarian, dozens of REPSA employees interrupted a private meeting, blocked all the doors, and threatened the delegates.
Of course, REPSA denied it. But alarmingly, Cargill followed suit -- despite its supposed policy of “no violence and intimidation.”
This shows that Cargill is not willing to hold REPSA accountable for numerous clear human rights violation. But REPSA won’t take non-violence seriously until Cargill cracks down on its actions. We need your help to push Cargill to step up!
Take action now and tell Cargill to cut its ties with a company responsible for human rights violations and environmental crimes!
Standing with you,
Andrew Fandino,
International forests campaigner,

EIVIND MELLEBY (NOR) AND JOSHUA REVKIN (USA)
ARE THE WINNERS OF THE
2017 STAR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Norwegian skipper Eivind Melleby and his crew Joshua Revkin (USA) are the winners of the 2017 Star World Championship in Troense, Denmark.

A hard fought battle today on the 6th race of the series among the leaders and potential winners of the 94th edition of this prestigious trophy: Lars Grael was the world champion for the first 4 legs of the regatta, but suffered a big come back by the Norwegian in the last upwind. Melleby read the shifts better and was able to go from tenth position to eight with enough boats between him and the 2015 Brazilian Star World Champion.

Lars Grael and Samuel F. Goncalves (BRA) are second and Reinhard Schmidt and Paul Sradnik (GER) third with a very consistent line of results. You can find full results on the 2017 Star World Championship website or on Star Sailors League.

Melleby and Revkin will go up 2,500 points on the SSL Ranking on Tuesday, allowing them to be in the Top Ten and earning a spot at the 2017 SSL Finals, in Nassau, Bahamas from 4th to 9th of December.

The Star Sailors League wants to thank the ISCYRA and Troense Yacht Club and its volunteers for managing such an amazing Star World Championship and welcoming us here.

Iran: Persian Crossroads and Complexities

Iran has been at the center of geopolitics for decades, but few Americans have ever had the opportunity to visit. Join us as we explore four of the country’s most important cities—Tehran, Shiraz, Isfahan, and Kashan—visiting preeminent museums, bazaars, religious and historical sites, and much more. Iran is a fascinating place to visit, with hospitable and generous people and a rich cultural legacy. Our program, which is designed to be educational and not political, offers an opportunity to experience firsthand the culture and history of this important yet largely unfamiliar country. Hear what a past traveler has to say about the tour.

Cuba
Due to President Trump’s decision to reinstate certain travel restrictions, options for Americans to visit Cuba will be limited. The Nation continues to offer “people-to-people” tours to Cuba (which are licensed by the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Asset Control). Trump is trying to destroy the goodwill between the people of the United States and Cuba—let’s not let him! Join us on one of our fall tours and meet the people and see the beauty and magic of Cuba for yourself.
