The Brief: This Is Why You Need To Start Gossiping More

Etsy Bosses
Who doesn't love Etsy? I mean you can literally find anything you ever wanted and then you can get your name monogrammed on it. And women are killing it over there according to the company's latest Seller Census. Eighty-seven percent of Etsy’s 1.7 million sellers identify as women (compared to only 33 percent of US business owners), making Etsy a true army of women entrepreneurs. Some fun facts about these Etsy women? They’re much younger than other business owners. In the US, the median age of business owners is a little over 50 years old. The median age of an Etsy seller is 37. They are also making some serious cash. About half of sellers use this income to pay for necessary household expenses, including utility bills and rent. And, of course, Etsy is the ultimate side hustle for many people. Over 50 percent of Etsy sellers have jobs outside of their creative businesses while 1 in 3 Etsy sellers run their creative business as their sole occupation.
XOXO Gossip Girl
So many people write gossip off as petty and stupid, but did you know it actually helped your ancestors survive and that your brain was designed for it? See way back when people lived in caves it was super important to know where the good berries were and which predators were going to eat you, but it was also important to know the 411. Who was sleeping with who in the cave? Who was the queen bee? Who got drunk on mead at the local watering hole (which literally was a watering hole in this case)? Survival of the fittest was all about the gossip. So basically we are structured to process gossip and it makes our memories better. Studies show that social knowledge and retrieving old information about a person or situation is extremely vital to our evolution. And the more you gossip, the better! According to a 2016 study, people who had large social networks were way better at processing information for new people. Gossip literally makes you better at networking which will advance your career. Plus, this once again reaffirms what an important show Gossip Girl was for society.
Bath Time
After a long hard day at work going home and taking a nice hot bath sounds a lot better than working out, but we usually end up exercising because we've been told that is better for our health (especially if we have some wine in the bath and a box of chocolates.) But it turns out, you were being told lies. According to a new study from some angels at the University of Loughborough in England, a hot bath can be as good for you as working out. You just have to like your bath really hot. Researchers found that participants who cycled at a moderate speed for an hour burned the same amount of calories as those who relaxed in a 104-degree bath. Now that is a pretty laid back workout it sounds like so in order to get the benefits of a SoulCycle class you would probably have to sit in a 200-degree bath (DO NOT DO THIS.) But still, you may want to move relaxing bath into the rotation once in a while instead of hitting the gym.

Anyone else thirsty this Thursday?

How about a classy tea time at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's new pop-up tea house (Pro-tip: the booze is on the roof)?
We're all prepared for this totally boring, uneventful weekend... JKJK APRIL FOOLS Y'ALL, there's tons of sh*t going down. Have you noticed that while they were just a couple modest carts only a few years ago, The Halal Guys seem to have blown up? It's a thing. Still waiting for Whataburger to notice us, but in the meantime, Eggslut is gracing the East Coast with its presence. Yo, b*tch, there's an IRL Los Pollos Hermanos from 'Breaking Bad' and 'Better Call Saul' popping up in NYC next week. Remember the floating park that bobbed around NYC last summer? It's back for the season, and it got Pretty Woman-ed.
Speaking of green space, Red Hook is getting man-made hills installed that are not only pretty, but functional. They're perf for picnics but also generate power and block floods. This cosmetics company has a SoHo location that lets you create a custom lipstick shade– lol of course, we had to try it out. #spoilYourself

Tea Tipsy
Tea for two, anyone? The Met is featuring a new pop-up cafe that serves tea straight from China as you feast your eyes on their new exhibit, “Age of Empires.” The cafe, located on the second floor, also serves cookies, cakes, pastries and coffee, incase tea isn’t your thang. The cafe opens April 3rd and will be open daily for the next three months. But you might want to head over to the Met before then: tomorrow and Saturday, composer Tan Dun of “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” will be performing! READ MORE…

Weekend Warriors
There’s nothing happening on April Fool’s weekend.

Just stay home and cry ‘cause it’s time to pay rent.

Ha, ha, haaa...we wouldn’t do ya like that.

We’ve got a rad list instead, so check it out: Wowfulls grand opening of mind-blowing desserts, the library’s After Hours: Women Marching Through History, International Pillow Fight Day throwing down in Washington Square Park, the Brooklyn Flea’s opening weekend, and moooore!

You gotta— you gotta— just read it, I can’t even. It’s too good. READ MORE…

Beauty Break
Finding the right shade of lipstick can be a serious struggle.

They never look quite like they’re advertised, and if you’re shopping at your local Walgreens or CVS...forget about it! The same shade looks different on every skin tone.

Well, now you can create the shade of your dreams, thanks to Bite Beauty. We went on adventure to Bite Beauty’s Lip Lab to create our own custom lipstick.

See how the magic happens. READ MORE…

The Hills Are Alive
It’s about to get a little greener in the concrete jungle.

Red Hook, the largest housing development in Brooklyn, is on its way to getting 14 man-made hills, known as Lily Pads.

The project is being headed by Kohn Pedersen Fox and hopes to be the solution to future floods and other natural disasters such as Hurricane Sandy, which left residents without heat or electricity for weeks.

The hills not only act as blockades but also storage space for generators and other power-saving machinery.

We’re a little more interested in their picnic potential, but that’s just us.READ MORE…

You Must Be Yolking
They call it the Fairfax— why, we don’t know. But the chef behind it, Alvin Cailan, is in town dishing up it and other breakfast delights.

And it’s all going down starting tomorrow, when you can find the L.A. chef and his creations at Chefs Club Counter.

Check this out: French eggs, caramelized onions, bacon, cheddar, chives, and sriracha mayo are all placed on a thick and hearty milk-based pain de mie roll. There’s also the Soho Salmon, duck rice, and jambon de Paris.

That’s all exotic and intriguing enough to need further investigation, right?

Find ‘em at the corner of Spring and Lafayette Streets, and come hungry. READ MORE…

Whatever Floats Your Boat
It’s a boat, it’s an island, it’s a...floating park? Ehhh, all of the above?

This year, we’re getting an 80-foot barge decked out in apple trees and a perennial garden, so can the beach trip and the orchard camping trip— we’ve got the perfect day outing right here.

You can find the floating cornucopia just offshore Manhattan from next month to fall, and when you go be sure to pull some produce up by the roots to take home.

The visit’s free, the fruits and veggies you can pick are free, and the skyline view is double-free. Dope all around, right? READ MORE…

Better Call Saul
Attention lovers of everything “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul”: mark your calendars for Sunday, April 9th, and Monday, April 10th, cause there’s a new pop-up restaurant coming to town, and it’s right up your alley.

Well, actually, you’re probably gonna need public transit to get there, but regardless, you can eat at Los Pollos Hermanos IRL.

This is NYC’s second “Breaking Bad”-themed restaurant, and our city is LPH’s last stop on it’s tour.

It will be poppin’ up at 243 Pearl Street... see you there! READ MORE…

Halal For All
The Halal Guys (yes, THE halal guys) are at it again!

They’ve been in the biz for three decades now and have no plans of stopping, but are in fact still growing their enterprise.

Their signature rice platters and gyro sandwiches are already at 35 storefronts, but they plan on going global— very soon.

Read more to see how the company Fransmart is helping them make the leap via franchising, and learn a thing or two about what it takes to turn a local success into a world-wide feeding frenzy.

Hint, it involves authenticity and elbow grease. READ MORE…

PASSOVER IS COMING It's time to BUY & SELL
Dear Friend,
Passover is right around the corner (April 10-18, 2017). As you prepare for this joyous holiday here is a reminder about two special mitzvahs to do before the holiday.
First, let's sell!
As you know, Passover is the holiday in which we eat matzah and refrain from eating or possessing any chametz (leavened). In the weeks preceding the holiday, we clean our homes and rid them of all chametz. If, however, we still own any chametz—whether food products or dishes —that we'd like to use after Passover, we may designate a rabbi to sell it all for us to someone not Jewish so that we do not own it for the duration of Passover. After Passover the rabbi acquires it back for us.
Most local rabbis offer this service to their communities, and it's best to contact your local rabbi to make this sale.
If you cannot do it locally, Chabad.org is pleased to provide this chametz sale service free of charge. Click here to read more about the sale of chametz and to sell yours online today!
Sell Your Chametz
But don't just sell; buy something good, too!
Passover is the holiday of matzah, and it is recommended to use handmade shmurah matzah, especially for the Seder night. Not only do many enjoy the special taste, but using these matzahs helps us fulfill the mitzvah in the best possible manner.
Handmade shmura matzahs are now sold at many supermarkets, and are often available for purchase at synagogues and at Chabad centers around the world. Make sure to include handmade shmurah matzah at your seder table and share this sacred tradition with your friends and family.
In case you cannot find shmurah matzah locally, here are several links where you can order shmurah matzah online.
Get Shmura Matzah
We wish you a kosher and happy Passover!
Your friends at Chabad.org
