    Bacardi Cup 2017

MIAMI, FLA. (March 11, 2017) – The breeze build up shortly before 1:00pm today with 7 knots from NNE and the RC got the boats on the starting line with the black flag up.  Unfortunately too many boats were over and PRO was forced to call a general recall that caused an automatic abandon as per SI rule 6.1 that stated no racing after 13:00.

Mark Mendelblatt / Magnus Liljedahl (USA 8481) won the 90th Bacardi Cup Regatta! The dynamic duo automatically became the winners ahead of Xavier Rohart / Pierre Alexis PONSOT (FRA8237) and of George Szabo / Eduardo Natucci (USA 8320) who were today’s light air favorite.  “The breezed filled in nicely and we were all eager to start.” Said Mark Mendelblatt. “We did not have a great start and we were happy for the recall, but soon after we realized that the cutoff time arrived.  I did the Bacardi Cup ten times and Miami is my town, I’m extremely happy to have won this prestigious regatta and would like to thank Bacardi, it’s great!” added Mendelblatt. Magnus Liljedahl was also very happy and commented: “Would have been nicer to win it after today’s race, but I’ll take the win… a win is a win!  I’m feeling better than earlier this week, Star sailing is a good workout, but most of all I’m happy to go out there and learn every time.” Concluded Liljedahl.  Mark Mendelblatt is a previous 2-time winner (2005 and 2013) and Magnus Liljedahl has won it 6 times as crew.

Second place winners Xavier Rohart (FRA) and Pierre Alexis Ponsot (FRA) are now leading the SSL Ranking followed by George Szabo (skipper) and Sergio Lambertenghi (crew) in second and by Diego Negri (skipper) and Bruno Prada (Crew) in third.  Details can be found at www.starsailors.com, the SSL Ranking will be updated as usual on Tuesday.

Third place for George Szabo (USA) and Edoardo Natucci (ITA) (USA 8320), they would have had a great chance to bring the Cup home on a light day like today.  For everyone there is still the chance to compete and win the Cup in 2018 that is scheduled for March 4th to the 11th, 2018.

    Top 5 Overall:
    1. USA8481 Mark Mendelblatt and Magnus Liljedahl – 13 pts
    2. FRA 8237 Xavier Rohart and Pierre Alexis Ponsot – 15 pts
    3. USA 8320 George Szabo and Eduardo Natucci – 18 pts
    4. BRA 8474 Lars Grael and Samuel Goncalves – 20 pts
    5. USA 8509 Augie Diaz / Bruno Prada – 23 pts

Bacari Cup 2017 - Final Day Highlights
    STAR SAILORS LEAGUE (SSL)

From the initiative of some of the world's best sailors, the Star Sailors League (SSL), launched an international circuit of regattas in January 2013. This new league has been built on the existing circuit of over 220 International Star regattas around the world, using a unified world ranking, created based on
the ATP World Tour ™, established by tennis players in 1972. Drawing on this inspiration from tennis, the SSL also awards substantial prize money to the best-ranked sailors. In December 2016, the fourth edition of the SSL Finals took place in Nassau, Bahamas.
By 2020, the objective of the SSL is to organize four Grand Slams and the SSL Finals every year. The annual SSL Finals is exclusive to the top athletes and the Grand Slams will offer fierce competition. In order to create a world ranking representative of the skills of each athlete and to balance the odds for each one of them, the Grand Slams will take place at venues known for different conditions:
    • "SSL LAKE GS" organized on a lake
    • "SSL SEA GS" organized in a sea bay
    • "SSL CITY GS" organized in an urban environment
    • "SSL BREEZE GS" organized on a windy area
In September 2015, the SSL organized the first Lake Grand Slam, on lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland, hosted by the Cercle de Voile de Grandson, and in May 2016 the first City Grand Slam took place in Hamburg  Germany, by Norddeutscher Regatta Verein and Hamburger and Luebeck Bay Star Boat fleets. On the first week of December 2016 the 4th SSL Finals will be held in Nassau Bahamas at Nassau Yacht Club.

EPI News—Our most important stories this week

The state of American wages 2016

In a new report, EPI’s Elise Gould finds that an improving economy in 2016 brought broad-based wage growth for most workers. Notably, wages at the bottom rose more in states that raised their minimum wages. Despite these improvements, large wage gaps persist by gender and race and between wage levels. Gould recommends that policymakers strengthen labor standards and that the Federal Reserve hold off on raising interest rates until the economy reaches full employment and worker pay rises. Read the report »

1.42 million guestworkers in the U.S.

A new EPI report estimates that 1.42 million temporary foreign workers, or “guestworkers,” were employed in the United States during fiscal year 2013—roughly equivalent to 1 percent of the total U.S. labor force. Authors Daniel Costa of EPI and Jennifer Rosenbaum, a visiting Human Rights Fellow at Yale Law School, encourage the U.S. government to collect better data on temporary foreign workers and their employers to help policymakers to make more informed decisions about foreign worker visa programs. Read the report »

Women have a huge impact in the economy, but it could be bigger

A new article by EPI’s Elise Gould finds that policies like paid parental leave and subsidized child care would increase parental labor force participation and boost the economy. Gould finds that if prime-age women (age 25–54) in the United States participated in the workforce at the same average rate as women in Canada and Germany (78.4 percent), the U.S. GDP would increase by $600 billion. Read the article »

    EPI in the news

The Huffington Post quoted EPI’s Ross Eisenbrey on the importance of allowing the overtime pay rule update to go in to effect. “If employers don’t have to pay for people’s time, then they can [use] it without giving a thought to it, and they do,” said Eisenbrey. “They’re very profligate with employees’ free time.” | Donald Trump will decide whether you get overtime pay »
EPI’s Heidi Shierholz spoke to The Wall Street Journal on why unemployment benefits claims are dropping, surmising it could be the result of increased temporary work or difficulty applying to or qualifying for state-run programs. | The growing gap between jobless claims and job losses »
PBS Newshour covered new EPI research that finds that at the median, in terms of hourly pay, women are paid 83 cents on the dollar. | Here’s what the economy would look like without women »
In a story about gender wage gaps, Marketplace cited EPI research that black women get paid 65 cents and Hispanic women get paid 59 cents for every dollar that non-Hispanic white men get paid. | Here's what the wage gap looks like »
Vox used EPI research to make the case that child care workers are underpaid, quoting EPI’s Elise Gould saying, “Despite the crucial nature of their work, child care workers’ job quality does not seem to be valued in today’s economy.” | Child care workers are paid less than dog walkers or janitors »
