Yes, We Can Still Talk About Reparations
Portrait of James TrimarcoIn the current political climate, advocates for racial justice are more likely to be defending basic rights than working for reparations. But progress may be closer than it seems. I invite you to read Sarah Macaraeg and Yana Kunitchoff’s detailed account of how victims of racist police torture in Chicago won a reparations law unlike any other in our history. Crucially, they won more than just money; the law ensures victims’ access to education, and that their story will be taught in public schools. For organizers, policymakers, and others struggling to resolve difficult histories, Chicago’s story is the one to study.

Today, communities across the country took to the streets and congressional offices to send a message loud and clear: #WeFightBack for health care. I was proud to join CPD Action and other allies in Washington D.C. this afternoon to rally against the GOP’s proposed repeal of the Affordable Care Act and share why I’m voting NO on the House floor. The vote was scheduled for tonight but has been delayed another day due to strong opposition from our communities and disagreement even within the Republican Party. As a congressman who represents Minnesota’s 5th District, it’s my duty to listen to the stories of my constituents and make sure our government policies serve and empower them to live a healthy, happy, and whole life. The GOP’s planned repeal of the ACA does not serve my community. In fact, 39,200 residents in my district alone stand to lose their access to Medicaid under this bill, and 363,000 of my Minnesotan neighbors would lose access to preventative care if Congress guts the ACA. Please urge your representative to join me in voting NO on ACA repeal. Call 202-224-3121 to contact your rep right now before the House vote, which could happen as early as tomorrow morning. In case you’re not sure who your representative is, you can look them up here. The Affordable Care Act has helped millions of families across the country since it was enacted seven years ago today. These are stories your representatives need to hear. CPD Action, with its grassroots network of community-based organizations, has been a leader in lifting up the stories of those who depend on the ACA, including low-income workers, women, and communities of color.
It’s clear that Republicans need to hear more of these stories because every version of their replacement legislation, the so-called American Health Care Act, has the same result: it strips families of affordable health care options while giving tax credits to billionaires. Keep joining CPD Action in the streets, at town halls, and on the phones to fight for policies that actually serve you and your family, and aren’t just serving corporate interests. Call 202-224-3121 right now and urge your representative to vote NO on the American Health Care Act (the ACA repeal bill). If thousands of our community members can’t afford health care, the entire community suffers. As Senator Paul Wellstone used to say, we all do better when we all do better! Fight for your community and call your representative now.
In solidarity,
Rep. Keith Ellison

CPD Action, and our sister organization the Center for Popular Democracy, are building a rising movement of people fighting for a future of opportunity, equality, and inclusion. We're working on campaigns that promote a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda and win victories to improve people’s lives. Together, we’ll build a progressive future we can all be proud of. Please chip in $10 right now to support our campaigns

Respected friends,
BREAKING -- yesterday FEC Commissioner Ellen L. Weintraub sent a letter to Donald Trump demanding that Donald Trump produce evidence of the "voter fraud" he claims occurred in the 2016 election. Trump has made the disturbing and absurd claim that millions voted illegally in the 2016 election, and even specifically stated that thousands of people had been bused from Massachusetts to New Hampshire. And he has made these claims without a shred of evidence to support them. All of these claims severely undermine faith in our electoral system and democracy, and he has made them with an insidious agenda -- to set the table for voter suppression. It's downright absurd to have the President of the United States trafficking in conspiracy theories that have been called ridiculous by New Hampshire officials, including Republicans. Trump cannot get away with spreading lies that undermine voters' faith in the fairness of our elections.Call out his obvious lies: Demand that Trump actually put up evidence to back up his unlawful voting claims or shut up>> If Trump does have evidence that "millions voted illegally" in 2016, then he must share it immediately. It's clear at this point that he hasn't because he can't. But these allegations have consequences -- citizens may lose faith in our electoral system, and overzealous lawmakers may use them as an excuse to erect even more barriers to voting for minorities. Co-sign the letter and tell Trump to put up or shut up and produce evidence of his voter fraud allegations. Smearing the legitimacy of the 2016 election serves to disenfranchise voters and legitimize the increasing attempts to roll back the right to vote that most urgently harms minorities and the elderly. He is signaling an assault on voting rights, and his unfounded lies could be used by his administration, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, to suppress voting rights. Do not let Trump make wild claims without evidence -- co-sign the letter NOW>> Thank you for all you do to resist the regressive and destructive Trump agenda.
Sincerely,
Katie O'Connell, Digital Communications Coordinator
