Translating real world beauty into captivating photographs requires a mastery of nature's most unpredictable force: light! In this class, we'll discover how to use an on-camera speedlight to rescue photos from challenging natural light, hard shadows, unflattering raccoon eyes and unwanted reflections. Using test shots with a live model, we'll examine the results of natural and direct flash lighting, with tips on how to avoid the "deer in the headlights" look and how to capture the attractive "catch light" that makes a subject's eyes sparkle. After that we'll examine exposure metering and fill flash, two essential techniques that help you properly supplement natural light and reduce unforgiving contrast in outdoor shots. Plus, I'll guide you through flash compensation and how to adjust exposure for your subject's wardrobe tones.

When it comes to on-camera flash techniques, the number one method to master is the bounce. By using your speedlight attachment to bounce your flash, you prevent the harshness of a direct flash and create a broad, soft light source that compliments your subject — a photographer's first priority. I'll reveal creative bounce methods to avoid unsightly shadows, dull skin tone and lifeless eyes, and delve into using broad and short lighting to convey mood and communicate to the viewer. Challenging lighting scenarios frequently impair your ability to produce compelling outdoor shots, but we'll explore aperture, ISO, distance and power to better navigate inconvenient bright sunlight and shade. Master flash fill, strategic posing and the "Sunny 16"rule to create the atmosphere you want and the luminous look your subject desires. Enroll in Portraits with an On-Camera Speedlight, and ensure that poor lighting never prevents you from capturing a professional-level portrait.
