Food Styling Techniques for Appetizing Images

Mouthwatering food photographs are made well before you trip the shutter; whether you're shooting a cup of coffee or an elaborate entrée, your food styling skills can make or break your images. Join me, food photography specialist Andrew Scrivani, in my online Craftsy class Food Photography: From Plate to Photo, and learn essential prepping, plating and propping skills to create images that are good enough to eat! Light plays a crucial role in successful food photography, and our first lesson will show you how to recognize and manipulate natural light to showcase various subjects. Find out how to use backlight to emphasize texture, and create shadows and specular highlights for dramatic images. I'll also help you train your eye to identify good light and consistent exposure, even without your light meter.

Then, learn to convey mood using strategic shooting angles and lenses. Discover the three best angles for photographing food — the iconic tabletop view, the interactive diner's view and the artistic overhead — and learn my expert tips for using each. Find out which shutter settings and depth of field will make food look luscious and appealing, and learn how to switch up lenses to complement propping. And, discover my recommendations for inexpensive equipment and homemade accessories that will help you achieve appetizing results. Discover key propping techniques next, as I guide you through choosing the ideal subjects for your shot. Then, learn which characteristics matter most when transforming less–than–perfect produce into top–notch trimmings. You'll also find out how to incorporate complementary subjects and colors into your compositions to create truly enticing images.

Next, find out which food styling tools I can't live without. I'll share expert tips for maximizing the aesthetic appeal of popular items like fruit and vegetables, including techniques for properly slicing and dicing food for the camera. I'll show you the building blocks for showcasing "iconic" subjects, and help you style chicken, one of the most complicated foods to shoot, in several ways.

Create a composition that resonates with viewers as you learn to build an image from the tabletop up. Develop a scene that intrigues the viewer, and compose, prop and style a romantic dinner and a casual picnic. Finally, I'll reveal trade secrets for successfully styling some of the most challenging, in–demand foods. Learn two ways to photograph soup for delectable results, plus best practices for shooting a variety of liquids. Build a salad that looks fresh in front of the camera, and discover how to light and properly expose chocolate desserts and white cakes alike for evocative images.
