But shortly before 11 am on October 20, 1991, 65-mile-an-hour winds enabled the fire to spread through Oakland, California.By the time it was contained, the fire had killed 25 people and injured 150 others. It had destroyed 1,520 acres and more than 3,000 peoples’ homes.One of the drivers of the devastation was non-native Eucalyptus trees. These highly-flammable trees helped the fire burn more and spread farther.Now, Big Timber and the biotech industry want to plant huge plantations of Eucalyptus across the Southeast U.S. They’re hoping the USDA will approve a new, genetically engineered variety designed for colder climates. This is a disaster waiting to happen -- and we need your help to stop it! Help us reach 25,000 comments telling the USDA to reject risky GE Eucalyptus trees! John Swanson of the East Bay Regional Parks District Fire Department describes the burning of Eucalyptus trees as “a major torch exploding -- like a huge Roman candle going off.” A 100-foot tree can go up in flames in less than ten seconds.Now, imagine hundreds of thousands of those trees, planted close together, occupying an already drought-stricken region. That’s exactly what these new GE Eucalyptus trees are intended for.What’s more, Eucalyptus is known for spreading rapidly. So even if only a small number of GE trees are planted, they’re likely to quickly invade communities across the Southeast.The USDA can stop this from happening. All the agency has to do is reject the GE Eucalyptus tree. It’s accepting public input until July 5th -- so we need you to speak up NOW!Tell the USDA: Don’t let Big Timber and the biotech industry plant massive plantations of GE Eucalyptus!The timber industry wants these trees just so they have something else to cut down. In other words, they’re not just intent on wiping out our forests -- they want to manufacture entirely new forests to wipe out.We can’t let the USDA put our communities and forests at risk just so Big Timber can make a buck. We need YOU to stop the approval of GE Eucalyptus trees today! Tell the USDA: GE Eucalyptus trees aren’t worth the risk and should be rejected!
