CNETMobilePhonesiPhone 6S teardown reveals upgrades galore, similar hardware layout

Bill Detwiler cracks open the iPhone 6S and discovers plenty of hardware upgrades, but no major changes to the internal layout.
The iPhone 6S may look identical to last year's iPhone 6, but it's not the same phone. As with previous S models, Apple put most of the changes on the inside.
Like the previous model, the 6S measures 5.44 inches tall and 2.64 inches wide. It's a few millimeters thicker and about a half an ounce heavier, but I doubt most people will notice these differences.
The iPhone 6 and 6S both have a 4.7-inch Retina HD display, but the newer phone features Apple's 3D Touch technology, which can detect how much pressure you apply to the screen. Perhaps, this is why Apple covered the 6S' display with a new kind of chemically strengthened glass.
In addition to using stronger glass, Apple also used a different type of aluminum on the 6S. Instead of using a series 6000 alloy as they did on the iPhone 6, Apple built the 6S' body out of a more rigid, series 7000 aluminum alloy. Hopefully, we won't see any "bendgate" stories about the 6S.
Now that we've looked at the phone's outside, it's time to break out our tools and take a look at the inside.
For a complete list of specs, pricing and real world performance tests, check out the CNET's full iPhone 6S review.

Disassembling the iPhone 6S

To crack open the iPhone 6S, I removed the two Pentalobe screws located along the bottom edge and then used our handy, suction-cup opening tool to pop loose the display. Separating the front panel from the aluminum body was more difficult on the iPhone 6S than it was on last year's iPhone 6. Apple appears to have used stronger adhesive between the panel and the body.

With the front panel open, I removed several metal plates that cover connectors for the battery, front panel and other components. I then disconnected the battery and completely removed the front panel.
I left the battery attached to the phone to avoid having to glue it back to the body after the teardown. For several years, Apple has attached the iPhone's battery with adhesive strips, which work like those single-use strips people hang stuff on their walls with. The strips make removing the battery easy, but they're really only designed to be used once.
appleiphone6steardown024.jpg
Removing the iPhone 6S system board.Bill Detwiler/TechRepublic
The first internal component to be removed was the new iSight camera, which Apple upgraded to a 12-megapixel unit that can shoot 4K video at 30 frames per second. A small antenna, located in the upper-left corner of the body above the battery, came out next.
After removing a few screws, dealing with a new hex-head standoff, and detaching the remaining connectors, I lifted out the motherboard.
The last pieces to come out were the speaker assembly and Apple's new Taptic Engine, which sits below the battery and replaces the vibration mechanism found in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.
As with the battery, I chose not remove the headphone and Lightning connector assembly, volume buttons, ringer switch, power button and a slew of connector wires.
Most of these components are held to the case with both screws and adhesive. If any of these components were damaged, removing and replacing them wouldn't be difficult. But I didn't want to risk damaging them during removal.

What the teardown tells us

No big internal design changes: The overall hardware layout is the same as on the iPhone 6. The speaker and Lightning connector assembly is located along the bottom of the body, the battery is attached to the left side, the motherboard is on the right, and the camera assembly sits in the upper-right corner.
Reworked speaker assembly: The iPhone 6S' Taptic Engine is slightly larger than the old, linear oscillating vibration mechanism found on the iPhone 6. Apple reshaped the speaker assembly to accommodate this change.
Lower capacity battery: The iPhone 6S's battery is rated at 1,715mAh compared to the 6's 1,810mAh battery. Despite this reduction, Apple claims battery life on the 6S will be the same as it was on the older phone.
New front panel: Apple made several changes to the iPhone's front panel with the 6S. They upgraded the FaceTime camera from 1.2 megapixels to 5 megapixels, they added an improved Home button (which reads fingerprints much more quickly than the old one), and they added 3D Touch functionality. They also reduced the number of connectors from four to three. Unfortunately, they didn't also reduce the panel's weight. The new panel is actually heavier than the old one.
appleiphone6steardown001.jpg
iPhone 6S system board.Bill Detwiler/TechRepublic
Shields soldered to the system board: Unfortunately, the shields that cover the iPhone 6's motherboard are soldered in place -- obscuring our view of the new A9 processor (with integrated M9 motion coprocessor) and most of the other chips. As I wanted to (and did) put this phone back together in working order, I left the shields in place.

Solid S model update

Hold an iPhone 6 next to a iPhone 6S, and you'd be hard-pressed to tell the two apart. Except for a small S label on the back of the iPhone 6S and a newly available rose gold finish, the phone looks identical to last year's 6. Looks however, can be deceiving. Apple packed lots of new tech into the iPhone 6S, and if you're still using a 5 or 5S (and maybe even a 6), I would definitely think about upgrading.

Why Curiosity can't touch that Mars water

An analysis of the water on Mars may have to wait until NASA's human Mars mission in the 2030s.
Curiosity can't touch this.NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS
This week, NASA broke incredible news: It had found strong evidence that water still flows on the surface of Mars. This means, technically, Mars contains the ingredients to support life, at least according to our experience here on Earth.
But we're not going to be going anywhere near the hypothesized water streams, at least not with the Mars rovers currently rolling around collecting data.
The reasons for this are twofold. The first is access: Curiosity is physically unable to climb the steep slopes where the darkish streaks might indicate water flow.
The second? Even if it could, it's not allowed to, according to a United Nations treaty written in 1967. The Outer Space Treaty, which lays out the rules for space exploration along the principles of mutual cooperation, states that exploration will be conducted in such a way as to avoid contamination from Earth life, Quartz reports.
"Because liquid water appears to be present, these regions are considered special regions where we have to take extra precautions to prevent contamination by earth life," explained Rich Zurek, a scientist on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter team, in a Reddit AMA session.
"Our current rovers have not been sterilised to the degree needed to go to an area where liquid water may be present."
A "special region" on Mars is described by the Mars Exploration Program Analysis Group as places where terrestrial organisms might survive and breed under Mars conditions. Because Curiosity may harbour microbes from Earth, it is not allowed near these special regions.
We already know that bacteria can survive in space. A 2014 study found that microorganisms could very easily hitch a ride on Earth's spacecraft. In particular, spore-forming bacteria, which can survive harsh sterilisation procedures and have shown to be resistant to spacecraft-cleaning techniques, could survive on Mars. An experiment that placed spores of Bacillus pumilus on a facility on the outside of the International Space Station also saw the bacteria survive for 18 months.
But completely sterilising a spacecraft is impossible. The only surefire method involves intense heat, which would damage delicate instrumentation, so different techniques need to be used. Solar panels are cleaned with chemicals, for example, while microelectronics are placed in a vacuum chamber and treated with gas thatoxidises biological material, which renders it harmless.
These techniques are able to reduce the number of microorganisms to 300 per square metre, according to the European Space Agency, compared to the several billion that can be found in a square metre in a clean kitchen.
That doesn't mean a rover can't get to the water in the future; there are ways to work with the UN's restrictions.
"The rovers have been sterilized for their particular landing sites where there's been no evidence of present day liquid water," Zurek explained. "To go to the [water flows] rovers will be required to be sterilized to a higher level. We also take samples of microbes that might be on the spacecraft before they're launched, so we can compare with any future discoveries."
NASA's next Mars mission launches in 2020. Given that it's being designed to the same basic specifications of Curiosity, though, it won't be able to get to the water flows either. So our curiosity about Mars microbes is just going to have to continue unslaked... for now.

Wow Your Clients with Polished Family Wedding Portraits
Faced with an endless list of family members, a rapidly closing window of time and the high expectations of your clients, what do you do? Join me, expert wedding photographer Neil van Niekerk, in my online Craftsy class Wedding Photography: Posing the Family, and control the chaos of wedding photo shoots with essential strategies to capture memorable formal portraits of the family.

As you follow me on a wedding day photo session, you'll discover my favorite tips for wrangling a large party in a limited amount of time. We'll also focus on creating consistent lighting that can be quickly set up and modified and won't disrupt the flow of the ceremony or reception.

Don't get bogged down by the dreaded shot list—I'll show you how to create a detailed diagram to easily decipher family dynamics and quickly build up and break down groups. Starting with the wedding couple, we'll create shots that include every family member, from godparents to new girlfriends.

We'll walk through sequencing strategies so you can easily wrangle an unruly group with go–to shot combinations. From directing a nervous groom to dealing with asymmetrical groups, you'll learn essential tips to make the session run smoothly. You'll also find out why bridal shots should always be taken from both sides, and how to confidently direct both men and women with flattering, versatile poses.

I'll also show you how to deal with a very large group, whether they're standing, sitting, or staggered. Anchor every photo around the wedding couple, and never place anyone directly behind them—you don't want any floating faces popping up over the bride's shoulders. Small adjustments can have a big impact; be detail–oriented and assist family members with wardrobe fixes beforehand to save yourself time in post processing.

Lighting has to be efficient and effective, yet simple enough that it doesn't interrupt the flow of the photo session. I'll share my go–to set ups for both indoor and outdoor shoots, and we'll work with on and off camera flash, umbrellas and speedlights to create warm, dimensional light. Plus, join me inWedding Photography: Posing the Family, and you'll discover invaluable post–processing techniques, including how to fix closed eyes and remove distracting glare from glasses.

I know how chaotic family photo sessions can be, and I'm excited to share my favorite tips with you to make the day run as smoothly as possible. I've photographed more than 500 weddings, and I've also written three books on photography, including On–Camera Flash Techniques for Digital Wedding and Portrait Photographers, and taught numerous workshops across the United States.

Pro-Life Advocate Behind Shocking Planned Parenthood Videos Deported After False Arrest
American pro-life activist Troy Newman is on the board of directors of the Center for Medical Progress, which is responsible for the series of 10 videos showing the Planned Parenthood abortion business selling aborted babies and their body parts. This week, he was slated to head to Australia for a pro-life speaking tour at the invitation of a local pro-life group, but the Australian government is not allowing him to remain in the country.

ACLU Files Lawsuit to Force Catholic Hospitals to Do Abortions
Yesterday, the American Civil Liberties Union sued Trinity Health Corporation for refusing to perform abortions on women whose unborn babies were supposedly near death. In a federal lawsuit against Trinity, which is one of the largest Catholic health systems in the country, the ACLU explained that their doctors refused to perform abortions on five women who suffered preterm, premature rupture of membranes.

Abortion Clinic in California Closes Down for Good When Abortionist Decides to Retire
A California abortion clinic has closed down for good thanks to an abortionist who decided to retire rather than find a new location when a landlord wanted to use the premises for another purpose other than an abortion center. Shawn Carney of 40 Days for Life informed LifeNews about the information he received from local pro-life people participating in a prayer campaign at the abortion facility.

Pro-Life Rep. Jason Chaffetz, Who Headed Planned Parenthood Hearing, Launches Bid for Speaker
The pro-life Republican congressman from Utah who just headed up one of the Congressional hearing into the Planned Parenthood abortion business over its role in selling aborted babies and their body parts is launching a campaign for Speaker. House Republicans will vote for a new Speaker next week and pro-life Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California appears to be the frontrunner at this time to replace pro-life Speaker John Boehner.

Man Stabs Pregnant Ex-Girlfriend to Kill Her Unborn Baby, Wanted to “Get That Baby Out of Her”
In July, Samuel Easterbrook pleaded guilty to bodily harm and criminal damage charges after he beat his pregnant girlfriend in an attempt to kill their unborn child. The Daily Mail reports that Easterbrook stabbed, kicked and punched Kira Brooks while screaming that he was going to “get the baby out of her.” Thankfully, Brooks and her unborn daughter survived the violent attack.

Figure Eight

Is there anything Amy Schumer can’t do? Maybe take a nap? It was recently announced that the comedy superstar landed an $8 million book deal from Simon & Schuster, but if you think that was the first offer on the table, you’re wrong. She actually accepted a $1 million deal from HarperCollins back in 2013, but she walked away because she felt like she could earn more down the road. “I had a whole deal, but I decided to wait,” Schumer told GQ. “I thought I would make more money if I waited.” We hope, in addition to details on her wine nights with BFF Jennifer Lawrence, she’ll include a chapter on the art of negotiation. Tweet, Tweet

Believe it or not, your Twitter habits vary depending on whether you’re using your phone versus your computer. The study also found that you tend to be a little more negative when you tweet from your phone. This, plus that new study that says your phone obsession is hurting your relationship, as well as that terrifying newpeople rating app are just more reasons to put down your phone this weekend. Duck Face Is Out

OK, so we did just tell you to stay off your phone this weekend, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t know what to do in your next selfie. According to the people who determine this, duck face is out. Now it’s all about the fish gape. What is the fish gape, you ask? Basically in this one you want to part your lips a bit and tilt your head down (Rosie Huntington-Whitely nails it here). In just one look it conveys confusion, deep cerebral focus, and maybe a little bit of gas. So remember, go fish—not duck!—this weekend. [Related: How to Take a Professional Selfie]
