In the year since the infamous Ray Rice video, ThinkProgress took a look at what the NFL's millions have done to help victims of domestic violence. A new report shows that Texas' harsh anti-abortion law is hurting women -- and it might get worse. And, if you're still a bit confused about the TPP, here are the most pressing questions about it. This and more in our top news of the day:

Rob Valente remembers the moment like it was yesterday. It was September 8, 2014, and she was in Washington, D.C., surrounded by hundreds of domestic violence advocates from across the country to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first Violence Against Women Act being signed into law by President Bill Clinton. ...(read more)

Multi-Million Dollar Baby

It’s a good week to be Reese Witherspoon (of course, is it ever not?). Draper James, aka the Oscar-winning actress and producer’s new lifestyle brand, has just raised $10 million. (The clothing line includes a bag that says “Totes Y’all,” so we’re really not surprised.) Kirsten Green, founder of the early stage investment firm Forerunner, said, “More often we see concepts built around a certain product or a business model innovation. Reese’s company stood out in that it is less about an item, or even a category, and really about an attitude and a whole way of life.” Witherspoon, a social media pro, also loves connecting with her customers. She toldFast Company, “As an artist, often waiting months for feedback on a film, to be able to hear our customers’ feedback in real time has been amazing. I feel like that has helped us create products that are specific to what they want.” [Related: 7 Reasons We Love Reese Witherspoon]

Rising Stars

We already knew this thanks to the Levo 100, but younger leaders are rated significantly more effective than their older counterparts, according to a newstudy from the leadership development firm Zenger Folkman. Researchers looked at 456 managers under 30 and 4,344 managers who are 45 or older and found that the younger managers ranked more positively across 49 leadership behaviors, including being more receptive to feedback, inspiring others, and focusing on results. To be fair, the study also found that some negative perceptions of younger leaders are still very much in play. Older employees often mistrust younger leaders because of a lack of experience, and younger leaders are often seen as insensitive because of today’s 24/7 work culture. Oh, #thehustle. All Grown Up

Were Nancy Drew books some of your favorites as a kid? Or maybe you liked the 2007 Nancy Drew film starring a young Emma Roberts? Well, Nancy Drew is coming back, but this time it’s to the small screen. CBS is developing the show with a team of Grey’s Anatomy producers (so you know it will be good). As they describe it, “Now in her 30s, Nancy is a detective for the NYPD where she investigates and solves crimes using her uncanny observational skills, all while navigating the complexities of life in a modern world.” Since Drew is a heroine to so many girls of all ages, this is pretty exciting stuff. Plus, if this means penny loafers, sweater sets, and hair ribbons will be back in style, we’re all for it. [Related: 9 Podcasts That Will Make You Proud to Be a Woman]

Standing Strong Through the Storm

Standing Strong Through the Storm - October 8

HARDSHIP CANNOT SEPARATE US FROM THE LOVE OF CHRIST
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall…hardship…? Romans 8:35
The question asked is a personal one. Not “what” can separate us but “who”? The inference is our enemy, Satan, who tries every tactic he can garner to make us think we can be separated from Christ’s love. Today we look at his tactic of “hardship.”
Sixteen-year-old Lakech had always known a stable home in her small Ethiopian village of Moche. Her childhood as one of eight children was not carefree. But it was uncomplicated. Her father, a godly man, worked hard to provide the needs of his large family. They did not have abundance, but they survived. While Lakech was growing up, her father and mother came to Christ. They laboured hard and devoted themselves to bringing up their eight children in a God-fearing way. But two years ago, her father was framed by some enemies and charged with stealing trees.
The legal battle started with a hearing a few days later, dragging on for a year when the court found Lakech’s father guilty and sentenced him to a year’s imprisonment. He found himself sharing a cell with about 50 criminals, and his family was left in turmoil.
At home, mother was not coping well. Neighbors were mocking the children, claiming their father would be jailed for seven more years. “I started noticing that it was hard for my mother to put food on the table,” explained Lakech. “I could not watch my mother battle on her own. I wanted to finish school, but it was impossible for me to just carry on,” admitted the timid young teenager.  “My mother needed help.” Despite her age and innate shyness, Lakech left school and found a full-time job as a house servant some distance from her home town. For long periods of time, Lakech stayed away from home working, sending all her earnings home to her mother. Following her example, Lakech’s second oldest brother, also in his teens, quit school and took over the farming on their small land.
Then the local church began to help support the family, and Open Doors was alerted to the difficult struggle to just feed the family. The ministry was able to come alongside the entire family, helping supply their food, and then paying school fees so Lakech could return home and resume her studies with her brother.Soon afterwards, to the family’s great joy, father was pardoned because of good behavior and released after serving nearly half of his sentence. He was overjoyed and declared, “I was saying to myself, by the time I finish serving the sentence, I will find my family scattered and needy. But it was different. They lacked nothing and everything was covered. “I was also thinking no one will be with us,” Lakech’s mother shared. “But we now are in joy. I am happy to be relieved from my worries and above all to have my husband beside me. The Lord has blessed me with these two successes; both my daughter and husband have come home.”
RESPONSE:I will live this day aware that hardships can never separate me from Christ’s love.
PRAYER:Lord we rejoice in Your goodness and in Your provision for every real need.

MISWAK CLUB Teeth Cleaning Twig
Value Value Value
Brushing your teeth with a twig might sound strange, but the miswak is an ancient method backed by both the World Health Organization and the American Dental Association. People in the Middle East, India, and Africa have been using miswaks for centuries. A miswak is a Peelu tree branch, which has natural fibers and a list of effective natural ingredients for oral health. Nibble back the bark, reveal the miswak’s bristles, then brush. Naturally occurring antiseptics and oils help kill germs and freshen breath. It also has resins that protect enamel, and natural abrasives like silica and sodium bicarbonate—a.k.a. baking soda—that gently scrub and whiten.

The White House, Washington
The President has been wanting to have the conversation we're hosting today for a long time. He's been mentioning it in meetings -- and in remarks -- for months.
Today, it's happening. Right now, a group of workers, union leaders, worker advocates, and forward-thinking businesses are arriving in the East Wing of the White House. They'll have breakfast together, hear from the President and Vice President, and then hear from one another. They'll break out into groups. They'll ask each other questions and share their own personal stories. Then they'll engage in a conversation with the President. We'll be focused one singular mission: How do we empower workers' voices in our 21st Century economy? We're calling it the White House Summit on Worker Voice, and you can follow along and add your voice to the conversation, no matter where you are. You can participate from your desk or your kitchen counter. Here's how: You can watch events from throughout the day -- from the President's remarks, to the breakout sessions, to the conversation he'll be hosting later in the afternoon -- live and make a commitment to start a conversation in your workplace here.
You can ask a question or share a thought ahead of the President's conversation with workers here. And you can follow @USDOL where participants and panelists will be back stage answering live questions and reflecting on the day. It's clear why having a real voice in the workplace is beneficial to workers themselves -- but most people don't realize that the most successful companies are the ones that are doing this right. It's in the numbers -- firms with unionized workers have higher retention and higher productivity. Multiple studies have confirmed this -- and even more evidence shows that unionized firms with workplace practices that give workers input into the production process have the highest productivity, above that of both nonunionized firms and unionized firms without these kinds of workplace practices. The bottom line? There's really not much to claims about unions' negative impact on businesses. Everyone who's contributing to this country's economic growth ought to be able to share in it. That means having an effective voice, and some influence, in their workplaces. And making sure that happens in more businesses across this country requires an inclusive, honest dialogue like the one we're having today. It only works if as many folks as possible add their voices. The President doesn't always get personally involved in the shaping of events we hold at the White House -- but I can tell you that this one is different.
Thanks,
Valerie
