LOOKING AHEAD
Alibaba's Results The Chinese e-commerce giant, will report its quarterly earnings on Wednesday before markets open in New York. The company is seeking to expand its business outside that country, and last week it named a former Goldman Sachs executive, J. Michael Evans, to aid in that effort. It also recently signed exclusive partnerships with 20 global apparel brands for online sales in China. Analysts have been cautious about Alibaba's earnings since the company listed its shares in New York last September. The government's recent prohibition on online lottery ticket sales is expected to cut into Alibaba's revenue this quarter. - Amie Tsang Retail Earnings Sales at Macy's, Kohl's, Nordstrom and J.C. Penney are all likely to have been tempered by a decline in tourism because of a stronger dollar, the dearth in "must-have" products this season and overall weak traffic. Margins are improving, however, as retailers increasingly tighten their belts and slim down bloated inventories. Macy's reports its earnings on Wednesday, Kohl's and Nordstrom on Thursday and J.C. Penney on Friday. - Hiroko Tabuchi Houlihan Lokey's I.P.O. Houlihan Lokey, one of the oldest boutique investment banks on Wall Street, is expected to start life as a public company this week when it prices its initial public offering. The firm, whose stock is scheduled to start trading on Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange, is hoping to raise up to $314.4 million. At the high point of the expected price range, Houlihan Lokey would be valued at nearly $1.6 billion. - Michael J. de la Merced The Latest Signs of Economic Health On Thursday, the Commerce Department reports retail sales for July, which are expected to show a healthy rebound after an unexpected decline in June. A jump in auto sales and spending on the home should bolster consumer spending, which is an important harbinger of the strength of the overall economic recovery, economists say. Underlying the stronger retail sales are steady growth in jobs and falling gasoline prices, both of which are buoying consumer confidence. Also Friday morning, the University of Michigan will report its preliminary estimate of consumer confidence in August. Most economists do not expect a big change from July's reading of 93.1, a healthy level that reflects steady gains in terms of the job market and the rebound in home prices. - Hiroko Tabuchi and Nelson D. Schwartz The E.C.B. on Greece On Thursday, the European Central Bank releases an account of its thinking on Greece, and how far it is willing to go to prevent a collapse of Greek banks. - Jack Ewing Greece and Eurozone Growth The European statistics agency on Friday will publish its first estimate of economic growth in the eurozone in the second quarter. Economists expect that gross domestic product grew 0.4 percent in the 19 countries of the currency bloc from April through June. That would be the same rate of growth as in the previous quarter. Some economists warn that growth may have slowed because of turmoil in Greece, which unsettled businesses and consumers and made them reluctant to spend. - Jack Ewing

Debt Talk

You know that pesky little student debt problem ($1.2 trillion) this country has? Well, one presidential candidate has a plan to work on it and her name is Hillary Clinton. At a town hall meeting in New Hampshire this week, the state with the highest amount of student debt, Clinton will announce her grand plan, which includes reducing the cost of four-year public schools, making two-year community colleges tuition-free, and cutting student loan interest rates, according to her campaign aides. Read more about it here. (Related: 8 Best Colleges for Budding Feminists)

Heavy Medals

Olympic swimmer Katie Ledecky, who won four gold medals and set two world records in Barcelona, had a tremendous week at the World Championships. She set her 10th world record of the past 24 months and won four medals! No female swimmer had ever won four individual golds in a single World Championship and no swimmer, male or female, had ever swept the 200, 400, 800, and 1,500 freestyles in a single Worlds. This amazing feat is now known as the Ledecky Slam, but it looks like no one will ever be able to try for this again since there won’t be a 1,500-meter freestyle event at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. Why, you ask? Because of some antiquated system, which believes women aren’t strong enough to swim the “metric mile.”  But since Ledecky clearly proved women are capable, the Olympics committee may have to reconsider. Her current world-record time is better than the national men’s record in 50 countries and is more than 24 seconds below the time requirement for U.S. men to qualify for the Olympic trials. Someone should mention that at the next meeting. (Related: 4 Famous Feminist Trailblazers to Follow Now)

“I’d Like More Fat in My Water”

From the people who brought you butter in your coffee, they have now decided to do something gross, but super healthy, to your water. You know when you’re drinking water and thinking if only this had some oil mixed in it? Well, you’re in luck. Dave Asprey, the inventor of Bulletproof Coffee (aka Butter Coffee) decided to take the only drink with no calories, add oil to it to make it fattening, and then name it Fat Water. But apparently it’s the good kind of fat (medium chain triglycerides are so hot right now) and is way better for you than a sugary water or soda. This water is also more hydrating and gives you an added burst of energy, so they say. Basically this could be a good alternative to your coffee or your butter coffee.
