LOOKING AHEAD
The Latest Signs of Economic Health On Thursday, the Commerce Department reports retail sales for July, which are expected to show a healthy rebound after an unexpected decline in June. A jump in auto sales and spending on the home should bolster consumer spending, which is an important harbinger of the strength of the overall economic recovery, economists say. Underlying the stronger retail sales are steady growth in jobs and falling gasoline prices, both of which are buoying consumer confidence.
Also Friday morning, the University of Michigan will report its preliminary estimate of consumer confidence in August. Most economists do not expect a big change from July's reading of 93.1, a healthy level that reflects steady gains in terms of the job market and the rebound in home prices. - Hiroko Tabuchi and Nelson D. No Apology Necessary
Fox News host Megyn Kelly has become the news ever since moderating the first Republican presidential primary debate on August 6. Since Donald Trump is currently leading the polls, she had a lot of questions for him. Usually Trump loves attention, but apparently not so much this time. He called Kelly unprofessional and made some unpleasant, sexist remarks, then demanded an apology. But Kelly refuses and we commend her. She was doing her job and doing it well. Find out what she said here. (Related: 5 Ways to Handle Criticism Like a Pro)
Ch-ch-changes
It’s been a week of big changes for some important ladies. First of all, Birchbox co-founder Hayley Barna has stepped down from her post as co-CEO with Katia Beauchamp. The five-year-old company, which is valued between $400 and $500 million and has more than one million subscribers, was truly a pioneer of the subscription box set business model. According to an official statement, “Birchbox would not be the company it is today without her. While we very much miss having her in the office each day, she will always remain an integral part of the company and will continue to be actively involved as an advisor and member of the Board of Directors.” In other exit news, Aliza Licht is stepping down from her position as SVP of Global Communications at DKNY. This means every tweet for her very popular Twitter persona, DKNY PR Girl, has now been deleted. Guess she will just have to write more career advice books like Leave Your Mark! The Aquatic Life
You know the calming feeling that comes over you when you see a big, beautiful fish tank at a restaurant or office? Well, you don’t feel more zen just because the fish are pretty. According to new research, it’s the water that causes a de-stressing effect, meaning you might want to get some aquatic decor for your cubicle. Basically, we feel this way because of evolution. Way back when your only two job options were hunter or gatherer, you usually lived near water and it provided food, hydration, and was just really nice to look at all day (and what else was there to do?). Staring at water is like free therapy. So consider getting a little fish bowl or just watching clips of The Little Mermaid on YouTube (before she gets all tangled up with Ursula).
