| Respected friends
,
Medicare is under attack. Jeb Bush said that we should "phase out" the program. Chris Christie wants to raise the qualifying age. And this year's Senate and House budgets seek to make hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts, with the House's budget transforming Medicare from a guarantee to a voucher program.
Fifty years ago this summer, as part of President Lyndon Johnson’s “Great Society” reforms, Medicare was signed into law to help millions of older adults and people with disabilities access the health care they deserve. Today, thanks in part to the Affordable Care Act, Medicare spending per beneficiary is growing at historically low rates Despite the success of this vital program, some politicians will not give up on gutting the program. Take action now to demand that Congress reject cuts that fall on the back of seniors and the disabled and fight to protect Medicare for generations to come.
All the best, Sarah Arnold

Lockah's debut ON DECK is informative of the machinations behind his recently released LP It Gets More Cloudy. "You've got a flavour of everything that has informed my taste in music over the last while here," he explains. "Some of it a little ridiculous, but all of it is great music to my ears. I want you guys to listen to this and understand where I'm coming from when I get behind the decks. Here we've got some obscure rave things from yesteryear, Drexciyan New Wave, 80s Japanese oddities, Kraftwerk covers and all sorts of other tracks with tough breaks and danceable funk."..listen now

G is for Google
So will we soon be saying I “alphabeted that” instead of I “Googled that”? The Internet giant announced it was launching a new parent company, called Alphabet. It will be run by Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, and then Google will become a subsidiary of Alphabet with a new CEO, Sundar Pichai. “Our company is operating well today, but we think we can make it cleaner and more accountable,” Page wrote in a letter. Read more about it here. (RELATED: Anna and Elsa from Disney’s “Frozen” are Inspiring Girls to Learn How to Code)
Grey’s Paycheck
All those doctor shows make it look so dramatic and sexy to work in a hospital, but they never give us much of a view into their financial lives (probably because that would be a way less interesting show). However, it should be known that Meredith Grey was likely making a lot less than both McSteamy and McDreamy. A new study finds that female doctors in hospitals (versus private practice) get paid less for the same work. Women make on average $14,581 less annually than their male peers in this field. The reason? When surveyed, both men and women said work-life balance was their top priority for job satisfaction, but men listed high pay as their second priority, while women ranked it fourth. Researchers say this might be because women are more likely to be in two-income households, or it could be because when they do negotiate they’e viewed in a negative light for asking for more. Sound familiar? Different scrubs, same problem. (Related: You Got a Promotion, But No Raise—Now What?)
Keira Sounds Off
Celebrities, they really are just like us: They struggled when they were in their 20s, too. Though you may think you have nothing in common with the gorgeous, Academy Award-nominated Keira Knightley, but you’re wrong. Knightley, who turned 30 this year, is opening up about how she felt in her 20s in the September issue of ELLE. Even though she fully acknowledges that her career was on fire during this time, she wasn’t happy. “But as a person, you’re changing so much and you’re trying to figure stuff out. Some people go wild and have a great time and throw caution to the wind, and I was the complete opposite. I was very shy. It took me a lot of years to try and stop pleasing a lot of people and allow myself to have fun. It’s the difficult thing of getting out of your own head. To stop going, ‘Oh, there’s something I should be doing, there’s a way I should be behaving, I should be dressing….’ All of those shoulds, you can drown in them.” We hear ya, Keira. DEALBOOK HIGHLIGHTS
China Devalues Its Currency as Worries Rise About Economic Slowdown The move appeared to be a response to signs that the economy was slowing too fast for comfort and could raise tensions with trading partners like the United States.
The Upshot: Why Did China Devalue Its Currency? Two Big Reasons The nation wanted to keep its economy on an even keel, but it is also looking to assert more leadership in the global economy.
With Google as Alphabet, a Bid to Dream Big Beyond Search From Google's start, Larry Page has been afflicted with a desire for two competing corporate virtues: focus and expansiveness.
Breakingviews: Tech Breakups Show Bigger Is Not Necessarily Better The trouble is that with fresh cash in hand or the slate wiped clean from an old deal, there is almost always a wide-eyed desire for a new one.
Sumitomo Life of Japan to Buy Symetra Financial for $3.8 Billion The deal is the latest by a Japanese insurer seeking to expand its operations into the United States, the world's largest insurance market.
Carlyle Group and Other Investors to Acquire Veritas Technologies for $8 Billion Carlyle said it had teamed up with G.I.C. of Singapore and others to buy the data storage company from the Symantec Corporation.
Terex Corporation and Konecranes of Finland Agree to MergeThe combined company would be a big supplier of cranes and heavy equipment, with estimated revenue of about $10 billion a year.
LOOKING AHEAD
Alibaba's Results The Chinese e-commerce giant, will report its quarterly earnings on Wednesday before markets open in New York. The company is seeking to expand its business outside that country, and last week it named a former Goldman Sachs executive, J. Michael Evans, to aid in that effort. It also recently signed exclusive partnerships with 20 global apparel brands for online sales in China. Analysts have been cautious about Alibaba's earnings since the company listed its shares in New York last September. The government's recent prohibition on online lottery ticket sales is expected to cut into Alibaba's revenue this quarter. - Amie Tsang
Retail Earnings Sales at Macy's, Kohl's, Nordstrom and J.C. Penney are all likely to have been tempered by a decline in tourism because of a stronger dollar, the dearth in "must-have" products this season and overall weak traffic. Margins are improving, however, as retailers increasingly tighten their belts and slim down bloated inventories. Macy's reports its earnings on Wednesday, Kohl's and Nordstrom on Thursday and J.C. Penney on Friday. - Hiroko Tabuchi
Houlihan Lokey's I.P.O. Houlihan Lokey, one of the oldest boutique investment banks on Wall Street, is expected to start life as a public company this week when it prices its initial public offering. The firm, whose stock is scheduled to start trading on Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange, is hoping to raise up to $314.4 million. At the high point of the expected price range, Houlihan Lokey would be valued at nearly $1.6 billion. - Michael J. de la Merced
The Latest Signs of Economic Health On Thursday, the Commerce Department reports retail sales for July, which are expected to show a healthy rebound after an unexpected decline in June. A jump in auto sales and spending on the home should bolster consumer spending, which is an important harbinger of the strength of the overall economic recovery, economists say. Underlying the stronger retail sales are steady growth in jobs and falling gasoline prices, both of which are buoying consumer confidence.
Also Friday morning, the University of Michigan will report its preliminary estimate of consumer confidence in August. Most economists do not expect a big change from July's reading of 93.1, a healthy level that reflects steady gains in terms of the job market and the rebound in home prices. - Hiroko Tabuchi and Nelson D. Schwartz
