Be Careful Where You Sit

It turns out where you sit in your office really matters and it has nothing to do with natural sunlight. Cornerstone OnDemand released a report looking at over 2,000 employees and found that  who an employee sits next to impacts their performance. In fact, making the right seating changes can generate up to 13% gain in productivity and a 17% gain in effectiveness. For an organization of 2,000 workers, strategic seating planning could add an estimated $1 million per annum to profit. For employees who are “low performers,” the report found that their performance improves when they sit next to a strong performer because a good employee’s performance will “spillover” to affect those around them. And it improves quickly! The Spillover effects occur almost immediately, but then it can vanish within two months of exposure.  Read the full study here. (RELATED: 5 Genius Ways To Organize Your Desk)

The Happiest Hour

Heading to Happy Hour tonight? Or every night this week? It may be because you live in Washington D.C. According to a new analysis of CDC data by detox.net, our nation’s capital is the top place of drinking. After all, they are dealing with a lot. Vermont came in second because apparently eating Ben & Jerry’s and looking at the foliage just isn’t fun on its own anymore (plus the state has the largest number of craft breweries.) Rhode Island, Wisconsin, and Minnesota followed the top two. “Social norms and culture plays a huge part,” Ali Mokdad, a professor of global health at the University of Washington, told Newsweek. “Folks tend to drink more if they are in an environment where it is a norm to go out for a drink after work for example. Moreover, the network of friends someone has may influence behavior.” Other influencing factors include the number of bars, price of alcohol, drinking rules and the proximity of bars to each other. Utah had the lowest numbers of drinkers by state. (RELATED: What Successful People Talk About at Happy Hour)

Get Out the Tissues

There are those movies that you know will make you cry and one of the most famous ones is Beaches. If you haven’t seen it then stop what you are doing immediately and watch it because it will change your life (but leave work because the mascara is going to be running down your face.) It is a tale of best friends, crappy New York apartments, weird Broadway musicals, terrible 80s and early 90s outfits, bad husbands and ultimately feminism….on a beach. Nothing compares to that blow out fight they have at the Bloomingdales makeup counter (we’ve all been there.) It may even top the Shelby juice scene in Steel Magnolias.  Oh plus it possibly has the greatest friendship ballad song ever,  “The Wind Beneath My Wings.” Seriously if you listen to that and “I Will Always Love You” you are in for the night due to a condition of feeling too many feels. Now Beaches is a classic and nothing can beat the original combination of Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey starring with the recently passed Garry Marshall directing. However, a remake is in the works and it sounds pretty enticing because of two words: Idina Menzel. That’s right. The Lifetime produced remake will star Ms. Let It Go herself as CC (Bette’s role.) So not only will you be a crying mess, but you will also be walking around singing that damn song. It is the perfect way to show up to your next Tinder date. (RELATED: Is Crying at Work Ever Okay?)
