5 Questions You Should Ask Yourself Daily to Achieve Success

Constant improvement is not easy. Whether it is a skill, a positive quality, or a way of life you are looking to cultivate, staying on the positive side of the growth curve takes work.
My entire life, I have been immersed in worlds that have taught me how to continuously seek mastery and reinvent myself. I played hockey for 14 years. I played classical piano for 16 years. I played World of Warcraft as a teenager and became one of the highest ranked players in North America, with a gaming blog that had more daily readers than most professional columnists. I was a straight A student and honors graduate in college (after being a straight C student in high school). I went from being a malnourished kid undiagnosed with Celiac Disease, to being a 170-pound fitness model with 7 percent body fat. I graduated college with a degree in “creative writing” (everyone thought I was crazy and certain I’d be unemployed), and three years later, I am a Top Writer on Quora with over 10,000,000 views on my answers, work published in every single top digital publication, and the editor in chief at a digital agency in Chicago called Idea Booth.
I don’t say the above for any other reason than to preface the five personal questions I ask myself on a daily basis. Through all of my disjointed and in no way related interests, I have somehow found continuity and long-lasting parallels. Each one of my interests (or should I say “obsessions”) has taught me something very different, and yet they are all founded on the same basic principles.
In order to achieve “success” (and I put that word in quotations because success means different things to different people in different contexts), you need to constantly ask yourself these five questions:
  1. What Is My Unique Ability?
  2. Am I Still Growing?
  3. Am I Taking Care of Myself?
  4. What Is the Next Skill I Need?
  5. What Am I Most Proud of?

Watch VICE News Tonight’s full episode, “Charlottesville: Race and Terror,” here.
Week 30, in one sentence: President Donald Trump traded more threats with North Korea (apparently, we are “locked and loaded”); promised North Korea’s nuclear threats would make Guam famous; failed to denounce white supremacy after neo-Nazis terrorized Charlottesville, Virginia, leaving three people dead and dozens injured; finally condemned the white supremacists; immediately backpedaled and defended them the following day; tried (and failed) to speak to the mother of Heather Heyer, who died when a car barreled into a crowd of counterprotesters, during her funeral; said it was his idea to end two advisory councils after a bunch of CEOs resigned in protest of his Charlottesville response; lost members of two other advisory councils over Charlottesville; was asked by the mayor of Phoenix not to host a rally in the city next week; worried about the “beautiful statues and monuments” being lost in our country and pondered if leftists would come for memorials of George Washington; and gave condolences to Barcelona after a terrorist attack by telling Spain to study a completely false story about a general killing 50 Muslims with bullets soaked in pigs’ blood.

Day 204 — August 11

"Locked and loaded"

After spending the past couple days trading threats with North Korea,President Trump changed course Friday and attempted some measured, statesmanlike diplomacy.

Just kidding! He threatened North Korea again. “Military solutions are now fully in place, locked and loaded, should North Korea act unwisely,” he tweeted, while still on vacation. (He’s due to return on Tuesday.) “Hopefully Kim Jong Un will find another path!”
The continued standoff has spooked markets around the world.
Trump, however, found an upside to the mounting conflict. He called Guam Gov. Eddie Baza Calvo — currently dealing with the threat of being a target of North Korea’s nukes — and assured him that “when it comes to tourism, I can say this: You’re going to go up, like, tenfold, with the expenditure of no money.”

Day 205 — August 12

Trump fails to denounce white supremacists

Hours after neo-Nazis, KKK members, and white supremacists terrorized Charlottesville, Virginia, Trump failed to denounce the instigators of the violence and instead decried the bigotry “on many sides.”
Earlier in the day, a car had plowed into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injuring 19 others. The alleged driver, James Alex Fields Jr., is charged with second-degree murder. Two state troopers, keeping an eye on the demonstrations from a helicopter above, also died when their craft crashed. The president offered his condolences.
Trump’s equivocating comments immediately drew bipartisan scorn. “Mr. President — we must call evil by its name,” tweeted Sen. Cory Gardner, a Republican from Colorado. “These were white supremacists and this was domestic terrorism.”
While they may not have mentioned Trump by name, many top Republicans clearly expressed their stance over the next few days.

Day 206 — August 13

But what Trump really meant was...

The White House attempted to clarify Trump’s controversial comments on the violence in Charlottesville. In a statement to NBC, an unnamed White House official said that “of course” the president condemned white supremacist groups, although Trump hadn’t explicitly done so.
In a rare feat for the president, Trump didn’t tweet once but merely retweeted some positive press about himself a few times throughout the day. The backlash to Charlottesville and the president’s response was rapidly growing.

Sen. Ted Cruz even called for the suspected Charlottesville driver to be prosecuted for domestic terrorism.

VICE News' coverage

Day 207 — August 14

Seriously, he condemns it!

Two days after Heather Heyer’s death, Trump finally condemned, in a scripted statement, the racist hate groups that marched on Charlottesville.
“To anyone who acted criminally in this weekend’s racist violence, you will be held accountable,” Trump said.

Day 208 — August 15

And then he defended white supremacists

Trump backpedaled and defended the white supremacists in Charlottesville. “There is another side,” Trump said, with no teleprompter to feed him language, at a press conference in New York that was supposed to be about infrastructure. “There was a group on this side, you can call them the left, that came violently attacking the other group. So you can say what you want, but that’s the way it is.”
The White House sent official talking points to GOP members that said Trump’s comments on Charlottesville were “entirely correct” and urged Republicans to stand with him, according to a memo published by The Atlantic.
Trump’s infrastructure executive order, which went largely unnoticed, intends to deregulate and speed up infrastructure building on a grand scale. But to do that, Trump needed to revoke yet another environmental rule, this one mandating that projects consider sea level rise caused by climate change.
Earlier that day, Trump retweeted (then swiftly unretweeted) an image of a CNN reporter being run over by a train. Even Trump’s brief dissemination of the image drew widespread condemnation, especially just days after Heyer’s death in the Charlottesville car attack.

When asked about Steve Bannon’s future at the White House, Trump said:“We’ll see.” Trump also insisted he never spoke to Bannon about his response to the white supremacist rally and car attack that happened in Charlottesville. The president’s chief strategist used to run Breitbart News, a website widely credited with promoting the so called alt-right’s rise to mainstream prominence.

Day 209 — August 16

Bannon pulls a Mooch

Steve Bannon called an editor with The American Prospect and apparently wasn’t aware the discussion was an on-the-record interview, his colleagues told Axios. (Remember: Bannon once ran Breitbart.) The president’s chief strategist got candid about several major administration issues:
  • China: “To me, the economic war with China is everything. And we have to be maniacally focused on that.”
  • White supremacy: “Ethno-nationalism — it’s losers, it’s a fringe element. I think the media plays it up too much, and we gotta help crush it, you know, uh, help crush it more. These guys are a collection of clowns.”
  • North Korea: “There’s no military solution, forget it.”
Trump decided to end two advisory councils after eight CEOs resigned from them in the wake of his disastrous Charlottesville response. But it was totally Trump’s idea, he insisted: “Rather than putting pressure on the businesspeople of the Manufacturing Council & Strategy & Policy Forum, I am ending both. Thank you all!” the president tweeted.
Charlottesville’s mayor confirmed to VICE News that Trump hadn’t called him yet. “He was supposed to call me on Saturday,” Mayor Michael Signer, a Democrat, told VICE News’ Elle Reeve.
Speaking of mayors, Phoenix’s asked Trump not to host a rally in his city on August 22 almost as soon as the president announced his plans.
“I am disappointed that President Trump has chosen to hold a campaign rally as our nation is still healing from the tragic events in Charlottesville,” Mayor Greg Stanton, a Democrat, said in a statement released on Twitter.

Trump signed his widely supported “Forever GI Bill,” which means thousands of veterans will get back money they spent attending two for-profit schools that abruptly closed after years of federal investigations. Despite the bill, the Trump administration's rollback of Obama-era protections to students against fraudulent schools won’t stop current for-profit schools from preying on vets.

Day 210 — August 17

Trump worries about the "beautiful statues"

Trump shifted his defensiveness from white supremacists to the Confederate statues they seek to protect. In a series of tweets, the president mourned the loss of the “beautiful statues and monuments” that “will be greatly missed and never able to be comparably replaced!” (By the way, Trump once boasted about destroying beautiful statues at one of his New York properties)
The president offered condolences after the terrorist attack in Barcelonaby advising Spain to study a (false) story about mass murder. The (again, not true) tale, which Trump has spoken and tweeted about before, tells of U.S. Gen. John Joseph “Black Jack” Pershing, who in the early 1900s had his men shoot Muslim terrorists with 50 bullets dipped in pigs’ blood.

Day 211 — August 18

Bannon gets the boots

Steve Bannon’s role as White House chief strategist has come to an end, multiple outlets confirmed. While Bannon’s future was still being discussed within the administration Friday morning, Trump later told senior aides that he’d decided to fire Bannon, according to the New York Times.
Susan Bro, the mother of Heather Heyer, said she has “not and now will not” take Donald Trump’s calls. The president tried to call Bro during her daughter’s funeral on Wednesday. At first, Bro reasoned that she would call Trump after recovering from the exhaustion of the funeral — but then she saw Trump defend white supremacists and decided she wouldn’t talk to him at all.
Sixteen members of Trump’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, as well as members of Trump’s Digital Economy Board of Advisors, confirmed to VICE News that they announced their resignation in response to Trump’s Charlottesville remarks.

Will Trump try to bury a bombshell report on climate change in the U.S.?
Take Action
Tell him we demand to know the truth, and he must release the report without delay.
TAKE ACTION
RESPECTED FRIENDS,

According to reports in the New York Timesand other major news outlets last week, the Trump White House is deciding how to deal with one of "the most comprehensive climate science reports" ever published.

The report — which was written and reviewed by scientists from 13 federal agencies — affirms that climate change is real, it's caused by human activity, and it's already hurting people across the U.S.

The research directly contradicts Trump's and EPA Administrator Pruitt's ongoing efforts to diminish climate science and their false claims that climate change is a "hoax," and it threatens their pro-fossil fuel agenda. So there are real fears the Trump administration will block this report's release — or even change its contents before publication.

STJEPAN, all Americans deserve to know the truth about climate change — our future depends on it. Sign our petition now and demand that Trump release this bombshell climate change report without interference or delay.

Completed this year as part of the National Climate Assessment, the report concludes that "from the top of the atmosphere to the depths of the oceans," evidence of climate change is overwhelming — and there's no doubt that humans are the cause.

The furor over the draft report comes soon after the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration confirmed 2016 as the hottest year on record, and that:
  • Greenhouse gases were the highest on record.
  • Sea-surface temperatures were the highest on record.
  • Global upper ocean heat content neared record high.
  • Global sea level was the highest on record.
  • Antarctic had a record low sea ice extent.
That's not what President Trump and his big polluter allies want you to hear. Not while they're pulling the U.S. out of the Paris climate agreement, pushing through the dirty Keystone XL tar sands pipeline and trying to roll back the landmark Clean Power Plan, just to name a few of the Trump administration's disastrous attacks on the environment.

Americans have a right to know the truth about the urgent threat that climate change poses to our future, whether Donald Trump likes it or not. He needs to know that we won't allow him to censor science and destroy the groundbreaking progress we made towards fighting climate change under the Obama administration.

Tell President Trump to release this vital climate change report without interference or delay, and cease all attacks on our fundamental environmental protections.

Thanks for speaking out on this crucial issue, STJEPAN. I'll be in touch soon with more.

Sincerely,

Rhea

Bannon fodder

CREDIT: AP PHOTO/ALEX BRANDON, FILE
Pour one out for the country’s most powerful white supremacist. Steve Bannon, a senior adviser to Donald Trump and former chairman of Breitbart, was unceremoniously fired on Friday. But don’t expect the White House’s troubles to suddenly be behind them.
CREDIT: AP PHOTO/JULIE JACOBSON
In the week since white supremacists murdered a young woman in Charlottesville, VA, the president has equated anti-hate protesters with neo-Nazis, gathered harsh criticism from members of his own party like Mitt Romney, waited for days to reach out to the family of Heather Heyer (who aren’t interested in speaking to him anyway, thank you very much), and now he’s fiercely defending confederate statues.
