Tips & Tricks from Educators

Plan Ahead with Classroom
“At the beginning of the semester, I like to upload all assignments and posts for the coming months into Classroom as drafts. Because they’re editable, I can make changes as needed throughout the grading period." - Michelle Williams, 9th Grade Math, Toronto
Tracking Reading with Forms
“My fourth grade students are tasked with 20 minutes of independent reading each night. Last year, I began using Google Forms to help them track and process their reading. I created a form with fields including title, author, pages read, summary, and reaction. This is helpful for me as a spot check and to evaluate where they are thriving and struggling as independent readers.” - Mike Phillips, Elementary, Dallas

Take a tour inside the International Space Station
For 16 years, astronauts have been working and living on the International Space Station (ISS), a structure made up of 15 connected modules that floats 250 miles above Earth. On his last mission, Thomas Pesquet, an astronaut at the European Space Agency (ESA), captured Street View imagery in zero gravity to show what the ISS looks like from the inside, and shares what it’s like to look down on Earth from outer space. Students can journey to the station via Google ExpeditionsMaps, and Google Earth Voyager, and even go behind the scenes, floating right alongside the astronauts.

Berg's bitter cocktail truth

What to do when you're a cocktail connoisseur and can't get your hands on the best bitters, the so-called essence of cocktails? If you're Stephan Berg, you make your own. Soon after the Munich-based mixologist began experimenting making his own potent tinctures, his bartending friends started clamoring to stock their bars with Berg's uniquely flavored bitters. To satisfy demand, Berg founded The Bitter Truth, a bitters company that now supplies the world's best bars. But will splurging on a bottle be useful for anything other than cocktail hour? Berg suggests splashing celery bitters as a finisher onto tapas-style fried padrón peppers. MEET STEPHAN [Tapas Magazine]

Drinking the Kool-Aid (literally AND figuratively)

Could you win a political campaign with Kool-Aid? That's what Corey Stutte was bargaining on when he served the ubiquitous neon beverage while campaigning to be mayor of Hastings, Nebraska (he won). It helped that Hastings is Kool-Aid's hometown, where it began life in 1927. But we're wondering: how has the iconic punch stayed around for 90 years?! When the Great Depression hit just a year after Kool-Aid's arrival on the market, inventor Edwin Perkins decided to slash the price in half, from 10¢ to 5¢. Add in the jolly pitcher mascot, which reminded consumers just how much a single packet made, and Kool-Aid has managed to linger—sometimes as a stain on our favorite white shirt. Watch this vintage commercial and decide for yourself if Kool-Aid Man is as creepy as ever. WATCH NOW [Adweek]

A more elegant way to say "yes way, frosé"

Frosé might be the drink of summer 2017—but anything that requires us to lug out the blender isn't ever going to be our at-home staple. Fortunately, Food52 came up with the solution to slushy rosé flavored cocktails that are doable even in the midst of a stifling summer heatwave: ice cubes made from rosé and fresh fruit. You can use them in everything from sangria to sparkling water, but our favorite has got to be with a bit of bubbly—a light spritz that tastes of summer. GET THE RECIPE [Food52]

Rethinking Your Life and Getting Out of Survival Mode
8 Things Every Person Should Do Before 8 A.M.

Life is busy. It can feel impossible to move toward your dreams. If you have a full-time job and kids, it’s even harder.
How do you move forward?
If you don’t purposefully carve time out every day to progress and improve — without question, your time will get lost in the vacuum of our increasingly crowded lives. Before you know it, you’ll be old and withered — wondering where all that time went.
This article is intended to challenge you to rethink your entire approach to life. The purpose is to help you simplify and get back to the fundamentals.
Sadly, most people’s lives are filled to the brim with the non-essential and trivial. They don’t have time to build toward anything meaningful.
They are in survival mode. Are you in survival mode?
Like Bilbo, most of us are like butter scraped over too much bread. Unfortunately, the bread is not even our own, but someone else’s. Very few have taken the time to take their lives into their own hands.
It was social and cultural to live our lives on other people’s terms just one generation ago. And many millennials are perpetuating this process simply because it’s the only worldview we’ve been taught.
However, there is a growing collective-consciousness that with a lot of work and intention — you can live every moment of your life on your own terms.
You are the designer of your destiny.
You are responsible.
You get to decide. You must decide — because if you don’t, someone else will. Indecision is a bad decision.
With this short morning routine, your life will quickly change.
--Benjamin Hardy

The Trump Administration is Escalating its Assault on our Oceans
Take Action
We must mobilize immediately to fight back — before Trump and his big polluter allies decimate our coasts for more oil industry profits. Make your voice heard now.
TAKE ACTION
FRIENDS,

It's happening again.

The Trump administration is ignoring public opinion, science, safety and the planet's future — this time to open huge swaths of the Atlantic and Arctic oceans to offshore drilling. And they may even push to open up the Pacific and the eastern Gulf Coast to drilling.

These are the exact same areas that President Obama put off-limits to drilling just last year. Neither public opinion nor scientific facts have changed since then — the only difference is who's in the White House.

Enough is enough: Add your voice now to say No to offshore drilling in these areas!

The Interior Department is accepting public comments on this reckless move until August 17 — in just one week. We need your help to mobilize an immediate, massive public outcry that Trump and Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke can't ignore.

Tell Secretary Zinke that the American people want our oceans, coastlines and communities protected from dangerous oil and gas drilling.

Only someone with a whole lot of friends in the oil industry could ignore the dangers of drilling off our coasts. In the Arctic's Chukchi Sea, for example, the federal government itself has estimated a 75% chance of a major oil spill from just a single lease sale.

I'm sure you agree: These risks are simply unacceptable — and we must fight until we can be sure that our coasts are permanently off-limits to the oil giants.

With the future of our marine life, our coastal communities and our climate at stake, please stand with us and add your voice now to turn up the pressure on Secretary Zinke and stop drilling off our coasts for good.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Rhea
