A new EPI report by economists Ben Zipperer and John Schmitt finds that a recent study of Seattle’s minimum wage increase by University of Washington (UW) researchers has notable flaws that cast significant doubt on its findings. Tweet The high cost of being sick when you don’t get paid sick days In a new report, EPI’s Elise Gould and Jessica Schieder illustrate the value of paid sick days by showing what’s at stake when workers must take time off without pay. For the average worker who doesn’t have access to paid sick days—typically a lower-wage worker—taking even a half day off due to illness costs the equivalent of a family’s monthly spending on fruits and vegetables. Three days without pay is roughly equivalent to a month’s worth of groceries. While seven states, the District of Columbia, and 31 cities and counties have passed laws to grant workers paid sick days, the authors call for federal legislation that would allow workers across the country to earn paid sick days. Read the report» The Labor Department took a step toward rolling back the overtime pay of working people The Trump administration announced that it intends to weaken or kill the overtime rule, which gave 12.5 million Americans the right to earn overtime pay.
