Maternity Talk

Congrats to Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, who gave birth to twin baby girls yesterday! Because of Mark Zuckerberg’s recent decision to take paternity leave and more tech companies improving their policies, all eyes are on Mayer’s next move. She was criticized when she only took two weeks off after her first child was born, but she has already stated she’ll only be taking “limited time” for her maternity leave this go-around, too. Read more about it here. We’re happy for her regardless of her decision on the matter. [Related: Mark Zuckerberg’s Latest Move Could Be a Game-Changer for Paternity Leave]

The End of The Squad?

For the past year or so, Taylor Swift’s #GirlSquad was truly something we all aspired to be part of (oh, maybe that was just me). But could the hype of the squad be coming to an end? In the The Hollywood Reporter‘s latest Women in Entertainment issue, famed critic Camille Paglia blasted Swift’s creation of the Girl Squad culture for being a marketing ploy to sell feminism. She wrote, “In our wide-open modern era of independent careers, girl squads can help women advance if they avoid presenting a silly, regressive public image—as in the tittering, tongues-out mugging of Swift’s bear-hugging posse.” To add more fuel to the fire, young feminist Rowan Blanchard of Girl Meets World said, “Of course female friendship is a beautiful thing. It’s insanely powerful.” She continued, “But, the ‘squads’ we see in the media are very polarizing. Feminism and friendship are supposed to be inclusive, and most of these ‘squads’ are strictly exclusive.” Well, squad or no squad, we still want to wish Swift a happy 26th birthday this Sunday! Starbucks 4Ever

If you’re anything like me, half of your daily budget goes toward caffeine, mainly that of the Starbucks variety. Thinking about how much money I will give to that coffee chain over a lifetime is overwhelming. But soon, five people will never have to think about that again. For the second year in a row, the company is holding a sweepstakes for rewards members and offering FREE STARBUCKS FOR LIFE. That’s even better than getting a Starbucks ornament as a gift (hint, hint, nudge, nudge). Technically, it’s one beverage and food item each day for the next 30 years, but we’ll call it free Starbucks for life. Last year, 14 people nabbed this amazing prize, so it’s a bit more exclusive this year. But the coffee chain is also offering 25 people a chance to win one year’s worth of free Starbucks; 125 people to win a month’s worth; and 500 to win a week’s worth (get details here). With the Chipotle crisis still ongoing, we need all the help we can get. Daniel Holtzclaw, a former Oklahoma city cop, was found guilty last night on multiple counts of rape. While it's not uncommon for cops to be accused, it's quite rare for the crimes to be prosecuted. All of the victims are women of color. And, while Trump has whipped the party into a frenzy, it's worth remembering: Republicans weren't always the party of Islamophobia. Take it from George W. Bush.
