The Daily Signal
Dec. 11, 2015
Good morning from Washington, where Sen. Ted Cruz came to The Heritage Foundation to give a major speech on combating Islamic terrorism and gave us an exclusive interview. Josh Siegel looks at how easy it is to enter the U.S. on the "fiancé visa" used by a San Bernardino shooter. And Lindsey Burke shows how a new education law doesn't keep the feds out of your local schools.

Call to Action

This has been a huge week for women in Hollywood. In addition to the Golden Globe nominations coming out this morning (Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams, and Viola Davis all made the cut, but no female directors), yesterday Lena Dunham also called upon the powerful female execs in Hollywood to be mentors to the younger women in the industry. “I am advocating for all of us here to make it our mission to use our resources and turn this around as a team … It’s the right thing to do and it’s the only thing to do.” Read more about it here. The Case for Being Clumsy

If you’re anything like me, then you’re also so intimidatingly perfect and beautiful that your coworkers can barely muster up the courage to talk to you. Oh wait, that’s not me. That’s Beyoncé. But if you do find that people are intimidated by you at work, perhaps because you hold a position of power, Fast Company says you should spill some coffee on yourself to be more relatable. (I’m way ahead of you guys, because I’ve already got some coffee on my sleeve.) The authors of the article analyzed a bunch of studies, including a famous one from the 60s. The study had participants listen to a student interviewing to be on a College Quiz Bowl team, but they heard four separate interviews. In two of the interviews, the student came off as highly competent and qualified, and not so competent in the other two. But during one of the “good” interviews, the student said, “I’ve spilled coffee all over my new suit.” Guess which student the study participants liked better? Showing just a little vulnerability made the qualified candidate more appealing. [Related: 10 Signs Your Coffee Habit Has Gone Too Far]

A Second Bowl of Serial

Get ready to say goodbye to your friends and most human interaction of any kind. The second season of the highly-addictive podcast Serial has dropped. The first season, hosted by Sarah Koenig and produced by This American Life, became a cultural phenomenon overnight and even had your mom asking you what a podcast was. This season will focus on Bowe Bergdahl, a soldier who walked off his base in Afghanistan, then was captured by the Taliban, and was finally released in a prisoner exchange five years later. Koenig’s team collaborated with Mark Boal, the producer and screenwriter for The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty. Only the first episode has aired, so you have plenty of time to catch up and become a pod person as well.
