A software update for the Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch started hitting user devices over the weekend. The update adds some new apps, watch faces, a variety of new features, and the usual performance improvements and bug fixes. Among the apps that are now available to owners of the Gear S2 is a World Clock app, News Briefing and ESPN apps. The ESPN app will let users see scores of their favorite games on the device. Samsung also includes some new Mendini watch faces which may be especially popular for users who have purchased the Mendini bands. Some of the new features include a new unread notification indicator. A small red sphere will show up on the watch face when there are unread notifications to be reviewed. Samsung also added a new alert to let users know when Bluetooth is disconnected. There is a new search feature available in the Contacts app, screen time out settings have been updated, and emojis are now available through the keyboard.

Google has an active branch within the organization that works on a variety of life science issues, like thecontact lenses that are being developed that may include a means to monitor glucose levels. Although not “sexy” the work could be some of the most important the company pursues. A new patent application for a needle-free system to draw blood shows yet another project Google has been working on.The patent application describes a device that fires a microparticle into the skin using a gas-powered mechanism. Negative pressure would then enable the collection of a small amount of blood from the point where the microparticle enters the skin layer. The description provided by Google indicates the microparticle could penetrate to a distance of .25 mm to 2 mm. This is sufficient to induce a “micro-emergence” of blood released by the impacted tissue, an amount described by Google as what you might get from a mosquito bite. Although this is a small amount, it would be sufficient for medical testing purposes in a variety of situations.Google’s application explains part of the success of the system is the fact that the size of the microparticle is below the threshold that would trigger a pain sensation for a patient. Google notes that the use of lancets of increasing smaller sizes is that they become too weak to pierce the skin, which was part of the reason for working on a different solution. Google describes devices using this new technology that are designed for single use as well as multi-use devices that may be worn similar to a smartwatch. However, it is not clear whether Google would be able to produce and get the necessary approvals to make this device an actual product. Anyone who does not enjoy having to give up a small amount of blood via a pin prick certainly hopes so.

If you have a Google Cardboard VR headset, you can watch selected clips from of a recent New England Patriots scrimmage in 360-degrees. Courtesy of Visa and Bank of America, owners of Google Cardboard can live the experience of a New England Patriots player for a few minutes. Film was taken in 360-degrees scattered throughout a typical day of practice. If you don’t have a compatible virtual reality device, you can still watch the scrimmage in 360-degrees on YouTube, however you’ll have to scroll using the mouse to see the full view. This is the first of its kind, so maybe, just maybe, it’s glimpse of what could be big plans for the future. Click here to view the embedded video. It’s Sunday, the time of the week when Talk Android brings you a report on some of the very best applications we’ve been using over the course of the past seven days. Today we’re focusing our attention on a fantastic package tracking tool, an awesome mobile shopping service, a great photo manipulation client and last, but not least, a comprehensive recipe database. UPS MobileAs the holiday season moves ever closer, it’s a given that most of us will be ordering more items than usual from online retailers and stores. If you’re purchasing gifts from vendors in the United States, it’s more than likely they’ll use UPS as their preferred shipping service, which is awesome news for us as it means we can oversee the delivery process from anywhere. If you have the UPS Mobile application installed on your handset, you’ll be able to easily manage and organize shipments on the go. Not only will you have the facility to track and nickname packages as well as view where they are in real-time, but you’ll also be able to receive delivery alerts and authorize the driver to leave packages at your home without a signature. Boxed WholesaleBoxed Wholesale is the mobile shopping application my friends across the pond have not stopped raving about. The app enables users to order anything from toilet paper to Lucky Charms to have delivered to their home within 24-hours. As the name suggests, everything comes in bulk. Meaning not only will you be able to save a few dollars by buying things in larger quantities than you usual, but you’ll also keep the cupboards stocked for longer which is great for this time of year.Registering and checking out with Boxed Wholesale couldn’t be easier. All you have to do is download the application, create an account, add your credit card details and verify your email address, then you’ll be afforded the ability to order goods in just one click. Perfectly ClearNo matter how good your smartphone’s camera is at some point during its lifetime, it’s going to take a bad picture. And as luck would have it its most likely going to happen in the worst possible situation, for instance, when you’ve just captured that once in a lifetime shot. Fortunately, Perfectly Clear is on-hand to automatically fix your poor quality snaps. Simply run the low-quality image through the applications software and you’ll be rewarded with a high-quality render, which is worthy of any family photo album. If you’d prefer to take the reigns yourself and manually make changes to your picture, you have a slew of settings, including noise, color temperature, blur, brightness and exposure to play with. Allthecooks RecipesI’ve recently turned my hand to cooking, and as a complete novice I’ve had to rely solely on recipes. That’s how I discovered Allthecooks. This fantastic application is home to over 150,000 user-submitted recipes, which are in my opinion, more often than not, better than those you’ll find from professional TV chefs. The app itself is incredibly smooth and easy to navigate, which makes it the perfect companion to take to the shops as you can simply scroll through the ingredients list while strolling through the aisles grabbing exactly what you need along the way. December 18 may be the day we figure out whether BlackBerry hit a home-run with its Priv handset or had a major flop. From our perspective, many see the BlackBerry Priv as a game changer. It has a unique design, useful features, a great display and is one of the most secure Android handsets out there. Over the course of its selling period, the Priv was able to sell in seven different countries including Canada, the United States, Germany, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. Up until this point, there has been no indication on how many units have actually been sold. This could be a make or break for BlackBerry, and will be a major turning point for the company’s mobile division whichever way it goes. The company is also said to announce its total third quarter financial results. So, how many units do you think BlackBerry managed to sell? Feel free to leave your prediction down in the comments. Just yesterday, Google Cast uploaded two new advertisements, one for the new Chromecast model and the other for the Chromecast Audio. Google is beginning to give its new Chromecast and Chromecast Audio more attention. The tech giant’s latest ads show off how useful the dongles can be. In the first ad, Google shows two people casting back and forth to the TV set in their home. Each person conveys the words they want to say through means of the TV. The video ends with one girl apologizing for doing the wrong thing and hugging the other. Google closes with the words, “don’t love it a little, love it a lot.” The idea is that the Chromecast can bring people together. The second ad starts off with a girl humming a song. Someone observing then uses Spotify to recognize the song title and casts it to nearby speakers wirelessly using his or her Chromecast Audio. Google displays the words “play your music apps out loud.” Both the new Chromecast and Chromecast Audio are available in stores today for only $35. You can watch the ads in their entirety down below. Verizon has announced that they will be adding support for Wi-Fi Calling to their Advanced Calling platform. Initially, support for Wi-Fi Calling will only be available on the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. Verizon says the addition of this feature will start rolling out to users as a software update starting December 8th. The Wi-Fi Calling feature will work with the other Advanced Calling features, like making voice or video calls, but will use a Wi-Fi connection if a user is connected. Verizon says the system will seamlessly transition to their network if a user is moving and transitions out of coverage of a Wi-Fi connection. Verizon’s announcement indicates support for Wi-Fi Calling will be coming to more Android and iOS devices “early next year.” Currently Verizon supports Advanced Calling on 28 devices and Video Calling on 21 smartphones, but it is not clear whether all of them will have Wi-Fi Calling added to the bundle of features available. Calls made using Wi-Fi will be free if made to U.S. phone numbers, but foreign number calls will be charged at international long distance rates.

One of the changes you may have noticed from Google over the last year is a bit more mature marketing campaign when it comes to Android and their own Google branded hardware, especially their Nexus smartphones. That has led to some advertising for the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P on television that is actually placed in some shows that have a wide audience. Google takes another page from traditional marketing by releasing a special holiday themed commercial for their devices.
The new ad, that plays on the Android 6.0 Marshmallow name, promises there is “S’more to love this season.” You may have already seen the ad running on television, but if not it is available on YouTube and you can check it out below.
