14 people were killed yesterday in a tragic shooting. After, politicians took to Twitter and offered their "thoughts and prayers." This video shows how the NRA bought those thoughts, so that they are all America will get -- instead of thoughts, prayers, and meaningful action on gun control. A NRA-supported ban means that scientistscan't even study gun violence. If you feel like mass shootings happen practically every day now -- it's because they do.

World’s Best Boss

Well, Taylor Swift is going to get some amazing holiday gifts from her employees this year. The 1989 singer took her entire 125-strong crew on vacation—and not just any vacation, to Hamilton Island of the Great Barrier Reef. Swift shared a sweet group photo of her crew and wrote a lovely message: “For all their hard work this year, they really deserve it. Thank you to Hamilton Island for taking such great care of 125 of the people who work tirelessly to make sure the 1989 World Tour stage gets built, the lights are on, the costumes are made, the guitars are tuned, and the show goes on.” Hey, there is a reason she was named as one of Fortune’s world’s greatest leaders. Read more about it here. [Related: Taylor Swift Teaches Us a Very Valuable Lesson About Self-Care and Burnout]

Just Another Manic Thursday

Even though Monday tends to get the worst rep in terms of days of the week, a surprising new survey reveals that people loathe another day even more. According to Whisper, the anonymous confession app, people tend to complain the most about work on Thursdays (I guess this is before going home, pouring some wine, and watching a full night of #TGIT shows). The company looked at 200,000 Whispers (PS: most of the people who use the app fall in the 18-29 age range) that focused on negative sentiments toward bosses and found that there was a major spike on Thursdays. So why does this tend to happen? Well, some possible explanations are that you’re just too tired from the week to get all your work done, or you’ve had three days for all that work stress to build up, so you’re close to your boiling point by the time Thursday rolls around. Well, good news—tomorrow is Friday, people! So close! [Related: WATCH: A Simple Meditation Exercise to Keep You Stress-Free at Work]

Party’s Off

Even though the economy is on the upswing, it seems that holiday office parties are not. In a survey by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), 65 percent of respondents said they plan to hold an end-of-the-year gathering for their employees, which is down from 72 percent in 2012 and 83 percent in 1998. This isn’t as low as the number of parties thrown during the recession (61 percent), but it isn’t exactly far from it. Why the decline? According to the survey, employees don’t get that excited for office parties, especially during this very busy time of year. Plus, with so many more companies encouraging employee bonding and camaraderie throughout the year, EOY parties don’t really feel that necessary. It also found that many employees said they would rather receive money or gifts than a party, but joke’s on them because another recent survey found that 23 percent of companies said they would offer non-performance-based year-end gifts. These companies need to take a cue from Taylor Swift. [Related: 10 Tips for Navigating Your Office Holiday Party (Or the Food at Least]

With the revelation that at least one of the attackers in Wednesday's attack may have had ties to ISIS, here's a reminder: it's still a guns issue. Despite the fact that terrorists have previously urged sympathizers to take advantage of America's lax gun laws, an amendment that would subject suspected terrorists to background checks before obtaining firearms just died on the Senate floor. A Missouri lawmaker has a creative solution: make it just as difficult to buy a gun as it is to get an abortion.

BREAKING NEWS ALERT
December 4, 2015
After the November release of dash-cam video showing a Chicago police officer fatally shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald and the first-degree murder charge that preceded it, many questions have been raised by activists, media and everyday Chicagoans. Why did it take so long to release the footage and why didn’t other officers who witnessed the shooting speak out? Why was Jason Van Dyke, the officer who shot McDonald, not charged until 13 months after the incident? Why did a series of citizen complaints not bring CPD’s attention to Van Dyke’s troubled career ahead of time?
The Chicago Tribune has shed light on the answers to some of the questions with an examination that found what in some quarters of the city is already common knowledge: Chicago’s system of investigating and disciplining its police officers is so deeply flawed as to be completely broken.

Applause, Applause

Celebrities really are just like us—even huge, world-famous musical sensations like Lady Gaga. They also suffer from career burnout. In a very revealing interview, theBillboard Woman of the Year confessed, “At the end of 2014, my stylist asked, ‘Do you even want to be a pop star anymore?’ I looked at him and I go, ‘You know, if I could just stop this train right now, today, I would. I just can’t. [But] I need to get off now because I’m going to die.'” Collaborating with Tony Bennett breathed some fresh air into her career, and after releasing the album Cheek to Cheek, things got better. “Once you start being mindful and really going ‘Do I actually want that?,’ you start to feel empowered and you find your value,” she said. Read more about ithere. She Got a Booooook Deaaalllllllll!

Open a fresh email and alert the book club because it’s official: Oprah Winfrey is writing an autobiography, appropriately called The Life You Want. Set for publication with Flatiron Books in January 2017, the book is also bringing Oprah an eight-figure check. Casual. This could definitely be one of our favorite things, and will soon be on the bookshelves of everyone in America. And Now a Lesson from Tina and Amy

We only have a few weeks left until we get to see Amy Poehler and Tina Fey together once again—and this time it’s on the big screen in Sisters. And if you’ve ever wondered if any jealously between these two exist, because they are both, you know, astronomically successful, the answer would be a big heck no. “There’s a hard thing that happens when you’re funny and you’re sitting beside someone who’s destroying, to not feel in any way that you’re somewhat diminished,” Lorne Michaels, Poehler and Fey’s former boss, told The New York Times. “To just be happy for how well they’re doing—that’s the rare part of their relationship and also the rare part in comedy, period.” And that support for women also comes through in their projects. Look at 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation, and now Sisters. “When we choose projects [both women produced the film as well], we do have our own internal Bechdel test. These are women who are in conflict, but they’re not in competition,” Fey said in the same article. #GirlPower [Related: Tina Fey and Mindy Kaling Reveal the Hardest Part About Collaboration]

Pantone’s two new colors of the year! Because sometimes you can’t just pick one. So the colors you should be buying every piece of clothing in for the next year are Rose Quartz (the unofficial best iPhone color) and Serenity (which could be the alternative name for Oprah’s autobiography). They’re basically blush pink and baby blue, but people will be so much more impressed if you use the fancy names.

BREAKING NEWS ALERT
December 4, 2015
Hundreds of pages of newly released Chicago police reports from the fatal shooting of Laquan McDonald are striking for one, simple thing: They are dramatically at odds with the dash-cam videotape that has sparked protests across Chicago, cost the city's top cop his job and embroiled Mayor Rahm Emanuel in scandal.

Emanuel dismisses top cop Garry McCarthy amid pressure for change
In the past four years, the mayor and police Superintendent Garry McCarthy failed to enact systemic change in a department with a long history of excessive force and misconduct. That cost McCarthy his job on Tuesday.
After Garry McCarthy: Chicago's next top copEditorial: After McCarthy
"Mayor Rahm Emanuel now will name McCarthy's replacement. The arc of crime in Chicago suggests that choosing a police superintendent is genuinely a life-and-death matter, and not just for a mayor's approval numbers."

Eric thinks "there's no need" for the Cook County state's attorney to resign over the Laquan McDonald shooting investigation. Voters should decide her future in the March election, he argues.
