What was the most exciting part of campaigning? What about of governing/serving in office?

Eight stone courses of the Western Wall that had been buried under an 8-meter layer of earth were recently uncovered in excavations conducted by the Israel Antiquities Authority in the Western Wall Tunnels in Jerusalem. These stone courses, completely preserved, are built of massive stones and are outstanding in the quality of their construction.
Furthermore, after the removal of this layer of soil, the archaeologists were surprised to discover that it covered the remnants of an extraordinary theater-like structure from the Roman period confirming historical writings that describe a theater near the Temple Mount. These exciting findings will be presented to the public during a conference titled New Studies in the Archaeology of Jerusalem and its Environs, which will take place at the Hebrew University. This year’s conference will mark 50 years of archaeology since the unification of the city.

Update from Public Citizen
FRIENDS

The Monopoly Man recently crashed a U.S. Senate hearing on Equifax’s misdeeds to share an urgent message: Financial companies are using the fine print in consumer contracts to obtain a monopoly over our justice system.

The result is that regular people — like those harmed by Equifax or scammed by Wells Fargo — can’t seek justice in a public court.

They are instead shuffled into secret arbitration proceedings where the deck is stacked against them.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) put an end to that rigged game by restoring consumers’ right to join together and hold bad actor companies accountable.

But before the ink was even dry on its new rule, members of Congress moved to repeal this important consumer protection — handing a virtual get-out-of-jail-free card to companies engaged in financial scams.

Tell your senators: Stand with consumers, not bad actor corporations like Equifax or Wells Fargo.

A vote to repeal the CFPB’s “rip-off clause” rule is expected in the coming weeks, so act now.

In forced arbitration, your chances of holding a company that wrongs you accountable plummet.

Not only are you barred from joining other consumers in a class-action lawsuit, but the corporation also gets to handpick the private arbitration firm that decides your case.

The average consumer forced into arbitration is ordered to pay their bank or lender more than $7,700.

That’s backward.

Don't let companies like Equifax and Wells Fargo take away your right to hold them accountable.

For justice,

Tell U.K. Officials to Stop Burning U.S. Forests for Fuel
TAKE ACTION
European leaders meet soon to decide the future of their destructive forests-for-fuel policies. Turn up the heat to protect our forests and climate and embrace clean energy.
 TAKE ACTION
FRIENDS

Last year, NRDC activists like you sent 50,000 letters demanding that Europe stop burning trees from America's southern hardwood forests for fuel — a practice that's destroying our sensitive forest ecosystems and fueling climate change.

That outpouring of action had a real impact, bringing more light to bear on just how dirty biomass can be and making clear that people on both sides of the Atlantic are paying attention to this critical issue.

Now it's time to take this fight to the next level. Are you in?

Tell the new U.K, Secretary of State for Energy, Greg Clark, to strongly oppose the most unsustainable uses of biomass when he heads to the EU Energy Council in the coming weeks.

The United Kingdom is by far the world's largest importer of wood pellets made from American forests. And Clark is playing a key role in determining the next generation of European bioenergy policies.

So it's vital that we reach out to him en masse and make sure he understands this basic fact: Grinding U.S. forests into fuel pellets to be shipped across the Atlantic and burned in European power plants is an absurd and dangerous practice that's only accelerating global warming and climate chaos.

Not only does industrial-scale biomass burning spew more climate-wrecking carbon emissions than coal...it also wipes out the very trees that absorb carbon pollution.

As if that weren't enough, chopping down vast swaths of our southern forests means destroying habitat for black bears, songbirds, and countless species of plants and animals found nowhere else on earth.

The E.U. Energy Council on which Greg Clark sits has the power to help end the misguided subsidies that drive the most damaging biomass practices. And you and I have the power to turn up the heat to make sure Clark gets the message loud and clear: It's time to turn to solar and wind — not burning wood pellets — to power the UK and Europe.

The International Day of Action on Bioenergy is October 18th, which makes your quick action now all the more important. Thank you for standing with NRDC and defending native forests and our climate.

Sincerely,

Rhea Suh
President, NRDC

Take Action Now
This week’s Take Action Now is focused on saving the Iran nuclear deal, sharing our net neutrality stories, and fighting Trump’s latest Muslim ban.

Can you help us grow Take Action Now? If you've used these emails to get involved with awesome organizing, forward this week’s actions to your friends and they can sign up here.
NO TIME TO SPARE?
Demand that Congress save the Iran nuclear deal. Last Friday, President Donald Trump announced his intention to decertify the Iran nuclear deal, threatening to ratchet up tensions with Iran and hurt diplomatic efforts with North Korea. As dangerous as this move is, it doesn’t formally put an end to the agreement. Instead, it passes the issue onto Congress, allowing that body to vote on reimposing sanctions, a move that would almost certainly cause the deal to fall apart. Call your members of Congress at 202-224-3121 and demand that they reject any efforts that would threaten the Iran nuclear deal.

GOT SOME TIME?
Share your net neutrality story. The Federal Communications Commission could soon vote to end net neutrality, the principle that all content on the Internet be treated equally. While we know the agency listens to deep-pocketed cable companies when it comes to the future of the Internet, the rest of us have our own stories to tell. Whether yours centers on activism, starting a business, connecting with loved ones, or any of the many ways we use the Internet, tell it here (you can also use that link to read other stories!). Free Press Action Fund will share some of the stories on social media and will make sure key lawmakers hear from you.

READY TO DIG IN?
Attend a #NoMuslimBanEver event. The latest version of the Trump administration’s travel ban goes into effect tomorrow, October 18. This order threatens to be even more dangerous than previous attempts, as it bans most travel from five predominantly Muslim nations—and restricts travel from three other countries—indefinitely, with no end in sight. In response, people across the country are gathering to demand an end to the Muslim ban once and for all. Events include a rally in front of the White House, another at O’Hare International Airport, vigils in Nashville and Chattanooga, and other events nationwide. You can find an event near you here or sign up for the White House rally here. You can also follow the actions using the hashtag #NoMuslimBanEver.

We’d love to know how these newsletters have helped you so far. Use this form to tell us how you’re taking action—either today or in past weeks—and to give us your feedback.

News that matters

Remember when Mom told you that if you want to be strong and healthy, you have to eat your greens? Surprise, surprise. Mom was right. A new study from Penn State shows that eating broccoli improves common digestive issues and helps maintain a healthy gut.

It's well known that blueberries are a “superfood,” but what exactly is their superpower? New research shows that blueberries may improve attention and cognitive function in children. After performing a double-blind study, it was found that children who consumed blueberry powder performed significantly better on tests than children that did not eat the powder. Perhaps Violet Beauregarde was onto something.

What we're reading

Disclaimer: This cookbook isn't all ‘healthy’ recipes. But everything in moderation, right? Sam Zien (aka Sam the Cooking Guy) makes cooking fun and easy. He shares some great recipes in his books and breaks them down so that even the most incompetent cook (like myself) can make great meals. This book is fantastic, but if reading ain’t your style, you can watch his vlogs here.

What we're listening to

Dave Asprey hosts this awesome fitness and nutrition podcast. Learn the ins and outs of healthy living from world-class MDs, biochemists, Olympic nutritionists, meditation experts, and Dave’s own experimentation. If you're looking for a fun and engaging way to learn about health and fitness, this is the podcast for you.

What we're watching

Dr. Steven Gundry, a heart surgeon and nutrition expert, explains why the food pyramid we were raised on is dead wrong. This is a quick video that will give you an introduction as to why the USDA dietary guidelines are incorrect and how you should fuel your body instead.
Jiro Ono owns a very small, sushi-only restaurant in a Tokyo subway station. Despite his humble appearance, Jiro is considered by many to be the greatest sushi chef ever. Jiro Dreams of Sushi follows the 85-year old chef as he recounts his life and shares his passion for sushi.

Released in 2012, this documentary has received a 99% on Rotten Tomatoes and YouTube Movies writes that it "is a thoughtful and elegant meditation on work, family and the art of perfection, chronicling Jiro's life as both an unparalleled success in the culinary world and a loving yet complicated father.”

For you Netflix lovers out there, this movie is available on Netflix. You can also watch it on Youtube for $2.99.

Run for Something
A quick note: We just endorsed 37 more incredible millennials running for local office. Read more about them now.

FRIENDS

Jason Rothman first ran for school board at age 22 -- now he's won re-election in his home district of Pomona. Jason talked to us about making the decision to run, what he enjoyed about campaigning, and the best way to make an elected official work hard.
Was there a particular event or issue that made you want to run, or was that always a goal? Why School Board in particular?
The Pomona Unified School District fired 690 odd teachers at the same time for essentially no reason. One of board members at the time died in office. There was an opening — because the school board has 5 members, there were 4 seats open. I asked the local teachers union for their endorsement to run for the special seat. I said I wouldn’t run without their endorsement because it would be really hard to win without it.

There were only three people in my race, 10 people over all. It would have been the top three other seats, winner take all. I said, “I’m 22 years old. I’m really young. The last person in this seat was literally 90 years old. I can win this seat, I can bring energy back to this school district and I can do it by listening to people. I’m not a stonewall-y kind of person. If you support me I can bring openness and accessibility.”

And I told them I could win. I think that’s the most important thing anybody wants to hear. A lot of well-meaning people run for office have a lot of great ideas but don’t have a chance.
You’ve lived in the same area for most of your life it sounds like. How has that affected your approach to campaigning and serving?
I’ve lived in the same area my whole life. I moved three blocks. I went to school in the district. I think that gave me a really unique point of view that nobody else had ever had on the school board. I went to elementary school, middle school, and high school in the public school of the district I was running in. I knew quite a few people in the area and can knock on doors all day long. A bit of civic pride goes a long way. Living in the same area for a while you get to know people.

I worked as Planning Commissioner so I had some experience, and it also shows you care. I used to teach at Cal Poly, so I had education experience as well.
What surprised you most about campaigning as a candidate?
How expensive it is to run. At the time — this is not the case anymore — we were an at large race. There were 50,000–60,000 voters in the district at the time. It’s shocking how expensive a local race can truly be. And that people just aren’t very nice. People expect that if you’re running for school board, you have a perspective you want to push on abortion, on gay marriage, but, you know, we don’t marry people in the school district. You get the real visceral reactions from people because you’re running to represent their children and people take their gloves off to talk about their kids — it’s a very visceral reaction.

I’m really bad at fundraising. First I was hitting up organizations for money, and then hitting up people that are vocally angry at the school district. You’re a furious parent, I’ll ask for $50. That adds up. Getting involved with other local officials who know how to fundraise, they put me in touch with some of their donors. Networking helps, but I’m still not very good at fundraising.
What was the best advice about campaigning you got?
Be honest. Be honest and be yourself. If someone is not going to vote for you because you tell them the truth, you’re never going to get that vote.

If somebody votes for you because you lied to them and they find out, they will do absolutely everything possible to be sure you don’t win again. That was from my dad, who said that if people don’t like you they don’t like you and lying to them to make them like you will just make them hate you.
What do you wish you’d known before you ran?
In California you can’t reimburse yourself for mileage while running. Which sounds like a silly thing but, you know, I’ve got a ’97 Dodge pickup truck, so you go door to door, block to block, getting 8 miles per gallon, it really adds up

You can’t really trust other elected officials or other officials in general. People will say one thing and do another. Trust yourself, trust your friends, don’t necessarily trust those in office even though they seem like your friends.

And then that signs don’t vote. I was losing the sign game by 2 to 1 and signs just don’t vote. If you’ve ever played Stratego or Chess — no vote is counted until the ballot, so you can think that you’re losing and still win.
You ran for reelection, but were unchallenged. Was that a relief, or were you looking forward to running again?
I ran for reelection and won in contested race in 2011 and then I was not contested in 2015 and I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t phenomenal if you already have a seat and nobody challenges you. (I know that goes against the whole ethos of Run for Something)

As a side note, if you walk into a free seat that’s like finding a unicorn. But if you’re taking on an incumbent — there is nothing that will make somebody work harder than somebody trying to take them out of their elected seat. In 2011 when I was up for reelection, there were five total people in the race, and I never worked so hard in my life. I didn’t want to lose my seat.
I love going door to door and talking to people. That is just one of the most enjoyable things you can do, mostly because no one has a clue who’s on the school board. There are almost 200,000 residents in the district and most people don’t know who you are. When you walk up to someone’s door and say, “I’m your school board member,” people love that. Even if they hate the school district, you’re getting “up off your dais” and you’re in their front yard in the rain. I love meeting my constituency. (Even with the dogs.) In September, in inland Southern California, when someone hands you a glass of water or a beer or a gatorade that’s always a nice feeling, because they don’t have to do that.
What is the thing you least expected?
Hmm. You never think about what you don’t expect. I’d say really the immediacy of what people expect you to be able to do. “I have an issue; fix it for me on my doorstep,” or, “My son got an F, fix it.”

Most people don’t have a clue about how a local government is truly run. They think that as a single board member you’re god, or that they’re god because they elected you. And as one vote out of five, I can’t walk into the school district to say, “Change Billy’s grade from an F to a C.” Or people think their school needs to be painted and I can wave my school board member’s gavel and make it happen. I don’t have that power. Bureaucracy is slow!

And, if you forget to call someone back, even if it’s an honest mistake, people will get mad at you. And they remember. Return your phonecalls, return your emails.
What kept you going and motivated on the campaign?
For elections, I spent a lot of time out in the midday sun in the street and thought if I gave up now, I would have wasted a lot of time and a lot of people’s faith. It would squander everybody’s sacred democratic thing if they vote for someone that loses because they gave up halfway, that’s just wrong.
You can head over to our Medium page to share Jason's story with a strong, smart future candidate in your life.

Thank you,

Run for Something
