Office Hours With Betty Liu, TV Anchor and Award-Winning Business Journalist

Dollar for Dollar

Salesforce just did something awesome for its female employees—that is, the company gave them a $3 million raise (in total). “We looked at every single one of our female employees’ salaries, and we adjusted it against all of our male employees’ salaries,” CEO Marc Benioff said at the Fortune Global Forum on Tuesday. “We can say we pay women the same as we pay men.” Pretty bold move for Benioff, one we totally applaud. Read more about it here. [Related: The Canadian Prime Minister Just Had the Best First Day of Work Ever]

Don’t Sleep On It

When faced with a big decision, we are often told to sleep on it. You may now want to rethink that logic. According to a new study, sleeping on a big decision may actually make it harder to decide. “Sleep failed to improve perceptions of decision quality and indeed seemed to make participants more reluctant to consider commitment to the preferred item [they were choosing between satchels],” the researchers said. The study was a bit inconclusive, so maybe going with your gut is the best thing to do. [Related: 7 Things You Should Do *Now* to Fend Off Holiday Debt]

The Cost of a Cookie

Bad news for anyone who loves Samoas (so everyone, unless you’re a liar): The Girl Scouts are raising their prices this year. The group announced Thursday that a box of cookies will now cost $5, up from the current price of $4 per box. “The No. 1 factor was us hearing feedback from adult volunteers that girls had such a great experience selling cookies, but they weren’t earning enough money from them,” Jan Goldstein, chief marketing officer at Girls Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts, told theToday show. But some of our wallets will be spared. The price increase will only be in effect for Girl Scouts in the greater Los Angeles area, San Diego, Hawaii, and Eastern Massachusetts. But San Diego, LA, and Hawaii all have really awesome weather, so I don’t feel too bad about them shelling out extra dough for some cookies. [Related: 10 Teens Inspiring Us to Hustle Even Harder]
