Good morning from Washington, D.C., where the House voted overwhelmingly to tighten screenings of refugees from Iraq and Syria—and where the Senate's intentions aren’t clear. Nearby, a poverty forum hosted by The Heritage Foundation heard from a Maine official who described progress on welfare reform in the face of political and media resistance. And you'll be surprised to read about the American city that keeps seizing cars, supposedly to deter drunk driving, in violation of state law.

Bonus Round

Good news if you’re already making dozens of gift lists for yourself for all your friends and family. It looks like you may be getting a bonus this year. According to a new survey from Accounting Principals, 67 percent of HR managers reported their company plans to give monetary holiday bonuses this year—with an average of $858 per employee. Woohoo! Signs you’re in the bonus pile? Eighty-one percent of HR and hiring managers noted that certain actions will more likely result in bonuses—54 percent of respondents voted for staying more motivated throughout the year, followed by being more positive or upbeat (43 percent), volunteering to take on more job duties (32 percent), reminding the company of their accomplishments (22 percent), or asking their supervisor for a bonus directly (13 percent). [Related: 12 Levo Team Members Share the Books We’ll Be Reading Over the Holidays]

Ladies in Waiting

And now onto some not-so-great news: New data from the World Economic Forum’s annual Global Gender Gap Index shows that it could be more than 100 years before women around the world earn as much as men (118 years, to be exact). Currently, women earn half of what their male peers are paid all over the world. Or you can look at it this way: women are making what men made way back in 2006. That was before the iPhone came out! Read more about this staggering study here. [Related: Here’s the Harsh Truth About England’s Pay Gap]

Cool Beans

Coffee addicts got the ultimate seal of approval this week and it had nothing to do with festive holiday cups. A new study published in the journal Circulation found that coffee is “associated with a lower risk of total mortality.” The Harvard scientists looked at 167,000 women and 40,000 men and found that those who drank three to five cups per day were 15 percent less likely to die a premature death. Decaf had the same results, so it has more to do with the bean’s nutrients, not the caffeine. [Related: 4 Life Hacks for People Who Spill Coffee on Everything]

It's been a rough day on the Hill: today, Senate Republicans made a promise that effectively ends the Paris climate talks before they begin, while the House passed a bill that would essentially halt the U.S. resettlement of any Syrian refugees. Watch this Representative shame his colleagues and make an incredible plea for accepting the refugees, who already undergo extensive vetting. And, the morning after Harvard students rallied in support of racial justice on campuses, someone defaced the portraits of black professors.
